My new L series

Gday guys,
i have got a car now. It is a 1990 touring wagon. 300,000 on the clock. I got it for $400.

the good bits... fairly straight body, only small dents on the bonnet. tyres are at about 85%. came with half a tank of fuel!

The bad bits... boot on Left CV is busted, the joint its self is still fine (for now).
Oil leak from an unknown location. I done a quick degrease and pressure clean today, but i was unable to pinpoint the leak.
Surface rust bottom of drivers door and windscreen. This should be no real problem, just a bit of rust kill should do the job( see photos).
The gear box is only High range :( So i bought another L that has dual range! picking that one up tomorrow :) I havnt decided which one i will put on the road yet. The one with dual range has a lift kit but i imagine that it has had a harder life..


I only thought of taking photos after i had already started to pull things apart. Sorry they are so small. I havnt got photobucket worked out yet..

Good stuff, great to see another person getting into L series :)
Gearbox / engine swaps are very easy on these cars so definitely base your decision regarding which car to use on whichever body is in the best condition... then swap mechanicals as required. The rust in those pics will never be effectively stopped no matter how much rust-kill, paint, bog, fibreglass is used. The only solution is cut it out and weld in new metal which for most home mechanics is out of the question. Certainly not worth getting professionally done either.
So I'd choose whichever body has less rust and go from there.

I agree with that. You've got one with all the fruit (touring wagon) and I'm guessing a base model - so you can now choose which body you want to put on the road and which accessories you want to keep/fit to that body.

A lift kit generally doesn't mean the vehicle has had a harsh life - one without a lift an some offroading could've had a worse life...

In the end you want a rust free body - this is what kills subarus.
