Liberty auto transmission not engaging

Post by farqussus » Mon Aug 31, 2009 8:19 pm

Excuse my ignorance and lack of technical knowledge as I explain this as best I can.

A few days ago in the morning I started my 05 Liberty (auto)and got a pulsing idle (revved itself from 700 to 1000 regularly). Touching the accelerator had no effect, planting it got it to 1500rpm. I turned it off, went back inside to see if I could find an answer, came back ten minutes later and it was fine.
Then today I got the same thing. It had been driven for twenty minutes or so, stopped at the shops for ten minutes, got back in and it would engage a gear but I couldn't rev it past 1500 and it no effect on my speed when I did. Luckily I only had to drive five hundred metres up my street at a maximum speed of 20km/h. It was trying to find gears of its own accord and seemed to be changing but nothing I did had any effect.

I guess my question is what am I looking at here? A new transmission? It's about fifty kms off the 100k service and I suppose I'll get it all done but if this is going to get exorbitant I'm going to have to strategise.

Any ideas? Thanks

Could be a problem with the tranny's ECU and the communication between that ECU and the engine's ECU...

Or best yet, get it to your dealer asap - tell them what's been happening and hope that it does the same thing for them. Murphy's law says that they won't experience the problem at all!

Have you done any offroading at all? The tranny's filter may need to be replaced.

The dealer or your service centre would be the best place for your subi atm.

Cheers

Not sure about the warranty, I bought it second hand. It happens sporadically so you're probably right it'll never happen at the dealer, but I guess I'll have to trust them (awesome). Never taken it over anything worse than a speedbump.

Thanks anyway guys.
