Splendourlicious

Post by username » Fri Jul 17, 2009 11:05 pm

On Sunday i will begin the grueling drive from Adelaide to Byron Bay for the third year in a row to attend the Splendour In The Grass festival.

07 - There was 6 of us, We packed in my mates dads Land Pooser with a trailer, the trip went relatively smoothly and we had an awesome time.

08 - There was 10 of us this time, the Landy wasn't going to cut it, so we bought a sweet urvan for $1500. it cost us around $800 to get it on the road and reliable. Surprisingly, it made it there AND back, it only used around 10 litres of oil :S. Sadly, we sold it not long after. Festival was even better this time round.

09 - There is 9 of us driving this year, and a few wet blankets who are flying. The Land Pooser is stepping up to the plate with the trailer again. This year though, The L Series is going, YEW. Also my mate with a Gen 2 Lib will be joining us on the trip.

I would love to put a picture of the L Series here, but no matter what i do and try it wont upload, i've even tried 5 image hosting sites with no results. i'll try again later.

The L Series will no doubt tick over into the 300k mark while attempting to make the journey. It hasn't got a great reputation for interstate trips, this year in May while driving to Bendigo for Groove In The Moo, We had to make and emergency stop in Horsham for a driveshaft replacement, which blew our arrival time + Credit Card out of the water.

Our first stop is in Shepparton and we will be staying at my grandparents house. From there we will head to Kiama to stay with my mates aunty and from there hopefully straight to Byron. In previous years we haven't stayed anywhere and just exhausted all our drivers untill we go to sleep on the side of the road somewhere - This is not fun, is ridiculously cold and you don't really get that much sleep anyway. Last year i had to sleep with the Urvans steering wheel inbetween my knees.

Hopefully it will be a good trip with no hiccups. I'm also planning to get a bit of 4WDing done along the way. I should get bucket loads of pictures aswell to document the trip.

Wish me luck,

Cheers,

Jake.

Soooooo, the L Series made it :)

Im pretty impressed.

We took 4 days to get there in the end, Staying in Shep, Kiama and Coffs Harbor with no hiccups.

Festival was pretty good this year, but probably not as good as previous years plus i missed most of Dananananakroyds set, which is one of the bands i really wanted to see.

When we were in Ballina, one of my exhaust studs had threaded the block and had fallen out. The exhaust was making all sorts of noises and the car was lacking a lot of power which it already lacked. Took it to an exhaust shop and they fixed it all up and put new gaskets in for $80, pretty good because i thought it was going to be a lot more.

Was pretty disappointed with fuel consumption, only getting around 350k out of a tank fully loaded if i was lucky, way less if there was hills involved.

After the festival, the landy and the L hung around for a day, with the lib departing for Queensland to extend the holiday. On tuesday, the L departed with the landy opting to stay for another day. Me and my mate Alex left Ballina at 10:00 am tuesday and arrived in Lake Charm in VIC at about 5 am wednesday. before we left we bought $45 worth of maccas between us so we didn't have to stop for food, this was a good idea then, bad idea now.

The last 30k or so to charm, the gps took me on some really poxy dry weather only roads. In my sleep deprived state, ended up spinning out and getting bogged in FWD so had to crank 4WD and was still sliding around like it was ice.

Ended up staying in Lake Charm until saturday, caught up with a few mates did a few skids, was pretty fun.

Here are some photos.

This is at the caravan park we stayed at in Ballina

Went down the marsh for a bit of sliding action, my mate got videos on his camera, will upload them later

Cost me around $30 at a happy wash to get all the mud out of my guards, and there's still more falling out as i'm driving

My mates brumby, he reckons he can get through more mud than me but refused a challenge because he didnt want to get it dirty.

Splendour In The Grass is just a fancy name for a music festival, there isn't actually that much grass at all, its mainly mud and bark chips.

Did the nimbin trip last year in the van, weirdest place i have ever been, couldn't walk more than a few metres with out getting offered something, i thought they would be more discreet about it but they dont seem to give a ....

Cheers,

Jake.
