Warped flywheel diagnosis
Howdy,
In a previous thread I have mentioned problems with my brumby gearbox. Had the box stripped today by another gearbox company with years of Subaru experience. They called me back telling me the gearbox is in exellent condition, nothing damaged, worn, broken, cracked and appears all bearings brand new (9000km since full reco). I am still gettting the clunking sensations from gearbox reigon (prior to gearbox being re-checked).
When your loading the engine (up a hill, accelerating hard) you get the noise, when you back off it goes away. Noise is there in 4wd and 2wd. Would a warped fly wheel cause this noise? I have never experienced a warped flyhweel before so don't know the signs. Exhaust is noisy but certainly not the cause of this noise. Engine steady bar is in perfect condition. Have a brand new r/h cv to install but current one is fine.
To date list of things done
Reco gearbox (Twice now)
new engine and gearbox mounts
Reco steering rack
Brand new L/h cv
New ball joints
new rotors and pads
All new front end bushes
new tyres
New clutch kit
new rear brakes
Brand new rear cv's
All new rear end bushes
Rear diff seals
uni joints in tail shaft

If you had warped flywheel it would be shuddering when you push/pull the clutch in and out... (reminds me of driving an 253 V8 for a mate who couldn't drive it due badly warped flywheel I ended up driving it burning the clutch after riding on the clutch - he wasn't happy and i said the gearbox has to be removed and at the end of the day he needs new clutch & machined flywheel) If it was that bad you would be stalling/riding on the clutch to accelerate/drive off.
If the flywheel was off balance - in specific revs it shudder and there will be vibrations in certain rpm.
Maybe there is something else there that I haven't experienced/mentioned.
Pity you're in blue mountains!
Cheers

I probably didn't see the other thread .
Under engine drive load does it clunk once or repeatedly ?
I'd think that if it clunked once on drive loads and again on the overrun it could be some sort of loose mounting or drive line issue like for example a tailshaft or diff backlash thing .
I did have an LC Lancer many years ago and it did something like that only it wanted to change direction slightly as well , turned out to be really decrepit strut tops and bearings .
Have you had the chance to get under this thing on a two post hoist (suspension at full droop) to pull and push on anything that is likely to be a culprit ?
Lastly , which Blue Mountains - west of Sydney ?
Cheers A .

Blue Mountains, West of Sydney is the addy. Under Load it clunks repeatedly. I just picked the box up this arvo and the gearbox guy gave a list of things he did. He mentioned that the bearing retainer had heaps of wear in it so it was replaced, he also replaced the selector arm as it was also heavily worn. Considering this box had only 9000km since full re-build, dodgy mechanics at it again. Hopefully this may solve the issues. I just replaved the driver side CV with a new one as it is the only thing left that hasnt been done besides machining flywheel. Hopefully I'll get the temporary box out, have the flywheel machined and new box in by mid next week. If it still clunks..................... Were gonna have ourselves a bbq!!!!
Stay tuned for more!

I feel dumb, I feel dumb, I feel dumb......How do I feel DUMB!!!
Problem solved....... DRUM ROLL............................................................
It was the Drivers Side DOJ. Before you all laugh, throw stones at me, Cancel my membership let me explain. Drivers side cv was replaced 4 months ago and has only done approx 1300km to date. So when you purchase a product you expect it will last longer than that! Ok It also brings back memories from a previous brumby I owned. Front cv's lasted approx 1000km and thats it.
I had l/h and r/h replaced, drove from Brisbane to Townsville. Made it as far as Mackay when the CV went Chk Chk Boom. The inner pot was so hot, I sat on the roadside for over 2 hours before I could touch it! Silly me being a hoarder, I threw the old cv's in the back so luckily they were still there. I replaced the cv on the side of the road and made it to Townsville and had it all checked out. The cv place there tells me that the cv's that were installed brand new in Brisbane must have been dry and they had forgotten to install grease. So I hand over another wad of cash and done...... NOPE. On the drive home as I am approching Bundaberg I hear the dreaded CV noise. I made is as far as North Brisbane and Chk Chk Boom. Cv inner pot exploded. Car was towed home. Next day I took the cv's that were originally replaced for the trip north back to the shop that installed them. They gave me two brand new ones free of charge. I replaced them.
About two weeks later, I hit to road from Brisbane to Melbourne....Guess what happend at Albury Chk Chk Boom. Driver side cv explodes. Again the inner pot was so hot to touch, I had to wait over 2 hours. I swapped the cv over with one of the 5 spares in the back and on my way. I made the return trip ok. I took the Cv back to the shop and they say, "Its not our problem, we replaced it in good faith so dont come back again".
I never did. I got so frustrated with the vehicle, I sold it!
Moral of the story..... Got no idea!!! At least I know my gearbox is fully rebuilt!!!!!!
