Sooo i just went through some water anddd.

Post by indy » Wed Jul 22, 2009 11:25 am

Well i just drove through a nice big water/puddle/mud thing yesterday, all was good at first. got home it was fine. then couple hours later, went to start it up to goto work. kicked over barely then huffed and puffed, turned off and wont kick back over.
So i left it, hoping it would all dry overnight, wokeup today still ain't starting.
Ive taking all the leads off the plugs, should i blow them out with the air compressor and spray some aerostart or innox on the plugs? what else should i do, any info would be rgeat as im hoping to get her purring before work again tonight lol. cheers all.

Its happened to me before too.

I tried letting my leads dry out but they still didn't work so I chucked a new set in and took the spark plugs out and made sure they were completely dry.

She's aliveeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
problem after problem, i tried to start her once more. battery flat (need to replace it, its not holding its charge at all), no jumper leads around the house, no other cars. so i just blew out all the leads with the air compressor and hoped for the best while clutch starting down my driveway, it worked thank god lol.
Lesson learnt, dont go through big puddles quickly.
is there anyway to sorta help wateproof plugs and the dizzy?

Yeh sorry matey yeh its an L-series, i checked under the dizzy cap no moisture, must've been the leads i guess. In the process of trying to take the lead off the dizzy cap (the main one in the middle) it snapped off, im guessing its corroded? or its not meant to come out and i broke it? lol so i sort of jammed it in there to make a connection which will do for now, until i goto repco.

Also when taking spark plugs out of the L series, what do you guys use? because its in a shit of a place to get to.

A mate of mine had an intermittent problem with his L - mainly when it was under load it would sorta shudder. Without looking at it I said I'd change the spark plugs, leads and the air filter. One of the leads came out in two pieces as it had created a short in the lead then burnt out a gap between the two parts of the lead, from this the spark needed to jump two gaps to get the combustion happening - under load this was a problem!

I've also seen an MY play funny buggers when an after market coolant bottle was added, the overflow from this bottle happened to point at one of the spark plugs, once the engine got hot the coolant bottle sprayed the spark plug and lead with water causing a short! That was easily sorted with some WD40 and the re-routing of the overflow hose...

Is your L MPFI (EFI) or carbie? The carbie heads have easy access to remove the spark plugs, the MPFI are absolute bastards to get in and out!

Cheers
