Hello everyone,
new to the ausubaru scene so ill get to it.
just bought a 97 liberty awd its got a ej22 im sure. the car had been sitting for a hour or so, i started it up after and for about 2 seconds theres like a noticible tapping sound then its gone and i cant here it on idle.
the sound reappears only for a split second when i am changing gears, say the first moment s of engine decelleration between a gear change
if i slowly bring the engine up through the rev range at about ~3000rpm the sound will appear but alot fainter then during gear change, and alot quiter then startup.
please any info on steps to fix
any ideas?
oh and i know there is a hole in the cat converter that is getting fixed next week but i dont think it is related....
Matt
some kind of tapping on start...

there is two things, can you rev it to 3k rpm on stationary at same spot where you'll hear tap noise, if not that i'll move to gearbox/throw out bearing area. Have you changed the gearbox oil lately?

nope, getting a "good synthetic oil" chucked in the gearbox with the exhaust hole fix next week too.
dunno if the previous owner changed it at all....
not sure what u mean in reguards to "can you rev it to 3k rpm on stationary at same spot where you'll hear tap noise".\
umm if you mean on cold start say in the morning just started it up then rev to 3000 and hold then yes its there but not as pronounced as the first second of startup.
