no not taking the piss, as vincent said its just another gear and do the same as jeff sometimes in the city on hill starts!! its there so why not use it, and with 27'' tyres theres not alot of difference.
although i think in the user book for these cars im pretty sure they say no to go over 80 in low? will have alook tomorrow and let you know!

I know with the L series low range the engine's revving its tits off at this speed in low range, it'll be different with the liberty's low range of course!Captain Obvious wrote:although i think in the user book for these cars im pretty sure they say no to go over 80 in low?
If you're going from high to low range make sure you change up a gear: Eg - 3rd high can change to 4th low without a problem

Ah ok, obviously a very different system to my old Landcruiser then, I actually had a 98 hatch with it but I only tried it once & that was only to see what it was like, don't think I'll be wanting to hammer it on the bitumen to much with the turbo but it's good to know I can change on the fly.

Same as gears on a pushie mate, but at higher speeds it'll be like going from the big ring to the little one in one go... super high revs. I've only ever used low range when starting a tow of heavy loads or 4wding (i.e. when I need it) as the 92 lib owners manual recommends against using the low range for high speed or city driving. No idea why, perhaps its the higher revs and waste of petrol?
If you do change on the fly, practice a fair bit at slower speeds first and I personally double clutch to try and match revs, just being gentle ya know? The more you love your box the longer it'll perform
I've not found too much to fault with the lib dr boxes, suppose I'll have to drive AP's car some time! Hey AP you coming this weekend?

My RX L has a DR AWD box in it and I use LR often , I just treat LR as a larger gap ratio wise than the other gears and change accordingly (mine has the lower L type LR BTW) .
Great for crawling around in bumper to bumper traffic and the odd up over the gutter/median strip excursion/detour . Also tight parking maneuvers .
Because I have the close (L carby) gearset and the lower LR ratio gears I sort of run out speed wise at about 40 odd km/h in 5th LR - approx 3000 rpm .
You can change gears and ranges at the same time on the fly though its easier to go up a cog and down a range or vice versa .
Cheers A .

Thanks for the info, now all I have to do is hope the asshats in the modification department at the rta will pass the fact that I have put Foz struts & GD WRX alloy arms in it, the lift blocks are no problem they passed the spare wheel carrier which they failed when I took it over the pits because of the angle of the lights being hidden. If they want it engineered I'll probably put the standard struts & arms back in as I know it will fly through.........TOSSER at the pits.
