Garage Roller Door lock - make more secure?

Post by AlpineRaven » Mon Apr 20, 2009 8:47 pm

G'day guys,
Everyday when i am not at home or overnight I always worry about my garage, and I wanna sleep better!

Story is - about 3 years ago the previous owners has told us that the garage was failed attempted to break in (due the alarm went off) its a double roller door, about 4 months ago next door's garage got broken into by the police during drug raid, they also had double electric roller door and it was able to open with force and ever since I saw that and I get really worried about ours, the back roller door has a deadlock (lockwood door type lock arched on the cement, will lock once you close the roller door), back window is caged & very secure and the back door has a deadlock with metal frame arched to the brickwall (impossible to break in with extreme force) but the weakest break-in point is the front roller door...

Now I have been trying to work out what is the best way to make the roller door more secure, i found this -
Image
But i don't like the fact that I will have to go inside from rear entrance to unlock the roller door but I can't lock it from inside once I take the car out because the house is alarmed, only way is for me to open, take car out, close then lock then thru backdoor then turn on the alarm on way out - pain in the arse... (have a remote controlled to deactivate the alarm but only works for the garage only)

Other option is something like, a type of a lock that I can lock from outside before opening/unlocking the roller door? The garage does have main lock but its buggered (it works but you still can lift it with force and break/bend the lock)

What have you done to your roller door? Do you know any other ideas to make the roller door more secure that might be impossible to open with force?
Cheers

Why not buy one of those & grind the tab that the lock goes through off then have it welded on the opposite side, then the angled bracket goes under the door instead of in the channel........or have something similar made.

Having opened a roller door with the back end of Cheap Grief :) I know where you are coming from.

I know a fella that imported a few nice doggies from Germany and they aren't shepherds. They do a patrol of the premises in alternate pairs every fifteen minutes. In between time they must be breeding, $10,000 a pooch is a bit pricey to guard an old subaru.

another option I have seen is a huge metal gate attached to the external wall of a roller door

poke a roller in the guts and everything just lets fly. to secure door as best as can would be to pin the extruded aluminum base down REMOTELY CONTROLLED locking system, like you probably have in the HIGH KB picture I did not look at. Surely it coulda been enough at 50KB? . Wonder if a jaycar catalogue would give you any ideas

Manually locked is likely to be more secure than any remote system anyway, spose you gotta work out what you want first

although i'm tipping anyone with lock pick knowledge could open it. (my link)
I know some dodgey dudes who would love to try and open it.

Xtra Lok have an external kit for the next model up from that one you posted. good solid bit of kit.

My friend has one of their motorbike Xtra Loop in his garage to chain is Ninja to the floor.
Loves it.

Try this as a cheap and effective home security system....

1. Go to a secondhand store and buy a pair of men’s used size 14-16 work boots.

2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of Guns & Ammo Magazine.

3. Put a few giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazine.

4. Leave a note on your door that reads:
Hey Big Jim, Duke and Slim, I went for more shotgun shells. Back in an hour. Don’t mess with the pit bulls–don’t know what got into them, but they attacked the mailman this morning and messed him up real bad. I don’t think Killer took part in it but it was hard to tell from all the blood.
Anyway, I locked all four of ‘em in the garage. Better wait outside till i get home.

Why not "alarm" the garage as well? It worked for your neighbours.
Don't you have insurance?

For the keyed type roller doors I used to drill a hole through the locking bar on each where it protruded through the track and put a long split pin in each of the holes.

Like you these electric ones have me worried though.

I used to use pop rivets for my sliding windows by drilling a hole through the top and bottom tracks and then through the rear of the sliding window frame itself and just push an unused pop rivet into the hole, it stopped dishonest people from lifting the sliding window up out of it's track .......... this was before I could afford security screens and there was no need to look for keys to unlock the window/s in case of fire.
