What vic roads say is always open to interpretation. As for passing the road worthy, it depends on who's doing it. The police in the know will canary a vehicle for an oversized lift if its not engineered... That said, don't be frightened to go the 3 inch, there are plenty of subi's around with the 3 inch and have not been a cop magnet.

As for the air suspension - the real problems come into play when a bag or two start leaking and you don't replace them. This puts more strain on other components, namely the compressor that has to keep inflating them. This will shag out quicker resulting in the system failing completly. This happens to all air suspension units when not repaired at the appropriate time.

The EJ22 will serve you well, there's a member on the board who has supercharged his lib with a simple kit, its a bit expensive to me but most likely worth the money if you can justify it.

Once again really appreciative on everybody's suggestions, definitely feeling welcome on these forums! Ok so a quick update for everybody...

Fitted:

Wrap-around bullbar off ebay... only bidder and a steal at $56!
Pioneer stereo, RRP$300, paid $200 at Autobahn sale.

Picking up today:

Outback struts and caps from Portside Auto Wreckers in Geelong... $250 for all four.
Checking out that sumpguard at jolly rogers in dandenong (can't find a working phone number for them, it diverts to a fax)

Ordering next pay:

F+R 30mm raised King Springs from Supercheap - $285 including shipping. Repco quoted $390
2in kit from Subi Wan Kanobi

Still searching/researching:

My parents have offered tyres for my birthday (today!) so now the search is on for 15" lib rims. What have people paid in the past, and are the lib rims the only ones suitable?

Hoping to get it all on over easter, should be very exciting!

outback or forester rims are the best choice. They sit about 7mm wider than the liberty rims which gives you more clearance for bigger tyres

also with sump guards - you can still buy them new from subaru for about $60. well worth the money I reckon. you only have to slightly elongate the holes to make it fit with the 2" lift

dont forget to get a full wheel alignment after your new suspension and lift goes in

Last time i was at Portside in January they had 3rd Gen outback there, if it is, its different setup to 1st/2nd Gen Liberty. (better double check with them) Also you will need trailing arms mounts if you're going for a lift. (if Portside is 2nd gen outback, then get the trailing arm mounts shld be abt $30 pair) Ah another thing you also need is steering linkage as you're going to install lift and liberty one is too short, otherwise you still can use liberty cut it and add 2" bar on then it'll work.
16" is a better rims than 15" but tyres are slightly more expensive than 15".

Oh Jollys Rogers won't pick up the phone.
Its a Pick a Part yard and you have to go there and have a look.
Rims - find some on ebay, a set wld be abt 300 to 600 bucks.

Cheers AP but we left for geelong before you're (rather important) post. I knew what generation outback I was after and they have do have the 96-98 (fyi apparently only the front end is left, a panel beater took the whole rear end of the car from the driver's seat back).

Your choice of terminology has me confused as it doesn't quite match up with my current bibles, being the shop manual from this forum and the haynes manual. I'm a noob, so any chance you would be able to post up what exactly I need to replace using the same terms found in either of those manuals so I don't get horribly confused? I'd really like to eliminate the guesswork.... By the sounds of things the lift kit really only includes the spacers?

I think I'm feeling a little bit like Alice, tumbling down the rabbit hole! Thanks everyone for your continued help, I look forward to being able to return the favour at somepoint!

Sweet. Are the bits included only what is needed for the body lift? As I'm also putting in the spring lift what other considerations are there?

A body lift is independant of your spring lift.

The only thing you could do is ask Dave to add a bit more offset in your lift kit tops to compensate for your raised springs. Not absolutely necessary, but it might make getting a wheel alignment easier. Just ask him about it.

Hey mate thanks for the post! So far just the bull bar on but hopefully tomorrow I'll have the new steel 16" purchased, and possibly BFG A/Ts - anyone recommend for or against these tyres? From what I hear they're pretty good. Any steel over alloys? I have the choice for little extra cost.

Internet is busted at home at the moment due to an arguement with optus, hopefully i'
ll be on more once that's resolved!

Alright so a quick question on trailing arm mounts...

Is it correct that the standard set up of a 92 lib, combined with outback struts and raised springs, will result in the rear wheels being forward of centre in the wheel wells? Will this result in a set of 16" rims and 215/70s not having enough space to work properly? Is changing the mounts to outback spec merely cosmetic or does it have performance benifits? Does changing the mounts restore close to the original geometry?

I'm currently on my teaching rounds in Dandenong so thinking about paying a vist to jolly rogers tomorrow to see what I can find.

Also, I only just realised that pedders springs are a 2" lift, as opposed to kings being 1". Would the added height of the struts, plus a 2" spring lift, be too much for the cv joints? How effected is the suspension stroke? Anyone currently running that setup?

Getting closer to build day, missing out on K Rudd's stimulation $$$ (I payed 5c too little tax, believe it or not) has delayed proceedings somewhat, and I'm getting excited!

That is correct, you'll need outback mounts to move it across, it should be okay with 16s.
Again, if you have lift kit then should install it, if you're just doing suspension lift - you'll need to install lift blocks to remove strain on the joints. I know subabits has them for $600 I think?¿

Jollys doesn't have any Outbacks, only Liberty - worth a look, was there today.

Anyone know if 215/70/16s would fit with outback struts and raised springs? I haven't enough dosh at the moment to buy the body lift and hoping to put the new wheels on asap. Managed to pick up BF Goodrich ATs with forrester alloys, along with a steel fozie spare with a desert dueller, all for $600

Haven't found any outbacks at wreckers so looks like i'll just order the trailing arm mounts straight from subaru, sump guard too if cash allows.

Anyone seen any gen 2 outbacks in melbourne wreckers lately? Looking for trailing arm mounts and maybe a sway bar.
