Modify EJ dual range gearbox to get lower range

Post by AlpineRaven » Mon Jun 11, 2007 7:09 pm

I have been trying to search for solid information of how to convert from 1.19 to 1.59 low range, How easy is the task?
from what I can tell is to get 1.59 from L Series and place them in EJ gearbox replacing 1.19.
How is it it? Can someone place detailed information?
Cheers

a detailed writeup would be good, expecially detailing the mods for the low range selection

.....IF you find it too difficult or too expensive, you CAN get a 'Low Range Replacement kit' from Scorpion Subaru that will slot into an EJ Gearbox to give it a 1.59:1 ratio _BUT_ this kit will only fit 1999 model boxes or younger.

I was hoping to perform what you have in mind there, but I found it easier to simply get a 99 EJ box for my 'L'.

Theoretically you CAN fit an 'L' gearset into an early model EJ casing but it is finding someone who will perform this for you that will be the challenge.

Best of luck... :)

AlpineRaven,

Have a look here. There's a good description of what to do in here, there's a little bit of flab you'll have to carve through to get to what you want.

Hope its of some use.

Looks like i need to buy another AWD D/R box to modify it (already have L series box & single range AWD in the garage) when I get my hands on D/R AWD box I'll do it.

Okay,
I am thinking about doing this task while I am doing the clutch job while the box is off the car...

Is there anything I should look out for?
Is there anything I should buy before cracking the box up ie. gaskets etc?

What I am going to do is to change the low range from 1.19 to 1.59 if I can... And hopefully will get them machined (I have access to an lathe) Planning to take my car off the road for a couple of days while do the box job.

Hmmm... This is what I'm hoping to do in the next few weeks before my EJ goes in - except I'm going to put the entire L series internals into the EJ casing to remove the need for an adaptor plate and I'll beable to keep my welded diff as the gearbox will be part time 4wd still ;)

I'm planning to do it all in the parts yard and only pay for one gearbox that has exactly what I want without any flab...

I haven't played with gearboxes yet so I'm looking forward to a new chapter in my mechanical knowledge/experience and activities...

Good luck with it AP - will it be in for the next 4wd trip??? :p

Cheers

Fair enough, yeah working on the gearbox is my new & last mechanical chapter (done engines/diff/brakes etc and gearbox is last one!)

Hopefully it would be ready before the next 4wd trip and looking forward to it!

Sweet! EJ low range SUCKS! And for the record, I have had driving experience of the EJ low range in Suberman's Liberty for a bit...

Yep tell me about it.. (I remember that!) 1.19:1 is nothing by powered behind EJ22! So yeah this is why I want to see more improvement with 1.59:1 specially crawling in some areas..

To give you an overall idea what the difference is multiply the diff ratio by the low range ratio ie in my case 1.19 x 3.7 or 1.59 x 3.7

The answers are 4.403 and 5.883 , this tells you effectively what you diff ratios become in low range .
