Lada Nivas have a two speed AWD divorced transfer case inc a center diff lock . Sound interesting ?

Hm an AWD one would be interesting indeed. Originally I was mostly thinking along the lines of one with 3 selectable positions;
1 - 4x4 (locked centre) hi
2 - 4x4 (locked centre) lo
3 - RWD hi

These seem to be the most common.
I would be a little hesitant in putting Lada technology in my car tho!


I don't think I would do a full chassis conversion to my Suby, however anything is possible....

Yes I know people have reservations about such a bling look vehicle but always remember this . Those walk backwards wart hogs had to live in some pretty wild conditions so the drive lines had to be durable if not high tech .

The advantage would be that Niva bits should be cheap because the things have such little percrived value nowdays .

Just as a little sting , I'd get a Niva (in good nick) into the sorts of places very few in any Roos could ever get . They are a purpose built off road vehicle to the point where creature comfort is a reluctant afterthought . Many people used to see them as a smaller early type Range Rover (Komrad edition) and provided you can drive off the beaten track they are very hard to beat .

Like in other instances they just take a bottle of Jack to look good ...

I am very sorry to go off topic. But...
Does your "in good nick" indicate you mean Stock? If so I have been 4wding with one and my Subaru can easily go more places. Except maybe 2ft+ muddy water as I still am having issues with the distributor. But I can easily climb rockier hills then a Stock Niva.

They have this thing called wheel travel (+ live axles) and Subarus being road car based are a bit lacking .

Yes stock for stock , how else can you compare two completly different animals ?

I have a friend with a Lada Niva , it's embarassed quite a few expensive SUV's and you'd cry if you knew what it cost .
It drives like a little truck which is as you'd expect from something of its purpose and era .

I wouldn't fancy driving round Siberia in a mid 80s L series .

Its just your "very few if any roos" comment seemed to me like modded or not modded Subies.
I have over come the wheel travel problem.
If I lived closer to your friend I would take up this challenge in a heart beat. But that's because I know any stock 4wd is pretty pathetic compared to a modded one, even a modded Subaru.

Funny thing is, we don't live in Siberia here mate, its Australia "two completely different animals"

What have you done about the wheel travel issue? I'm interested in figuring out ways to improve this on the wagon. The main trouble in the rear end seems to be pushing the CV angles beyond their limits, but perhaps if part of the rear end could be made "floating" more like a live axel somehow so the whole thing can move around. Just trying to think outside of the box I guess.

Yes Andrew I've thought about that before as well. Even drew up plans on how to build it all but can't find them now.

My fix, welded diff
