UM, WHERE IS MY ENGINE OIL GOING???????????

i hear u andrew. what u say is fair, but i shit u not, the rest of the car is near on perfect. new shocks/hd springs, bearings, rotors, and brakes all 4 corners. no rust anywhere, not even in the windscreen. interior as new.

and i really enjoy driving it. yeah, its a bit gutless i suppose, but it has done everything i have asked of it, and shamed supposedly better credentialled cars ( i once pulled a patrol out of a bog with it - almost made the patrol owner cry!!!!!

i have had a quote from combined servicing in clayton (victoria) for getting a low km motor from overseas, doing all the belts and gaskets on it, fitting it, and tuning it, for $2500 to $3000.

thats too much.

i am mechanically minded, i have rebuilt lawn mower engines, and water pump engines before - no dramas. so im not afraid of getting down and dirty, i have even don the timing belts on this thing. BUT, i have never done something this big before.

and i have a buddy who used to work at HM engine rebuilders who can talk me thru it.

the question is, am i wasting my time on rebuilding an ea82 motor with 280000kms on it? sure change the bearings and rings, but is the rest of the block had it??? the crank??? the heads and their components????

im really sad about this, cause i always thought it would blow a head gasket or something first!!! :P

I honestly don't think there'll be a problem getting it rebuilt, that is unless there's a crack in a head or something.

If you end up doing it yourself you'll probably end up wishing you'd paid someone else to do it.

i will pay for a rebuild of the current motor. you are right, i will probably wish someone else did the thing!!! particularly as it may become urgent.

advice i have been given suggests the heads are fine

(reco'ed heads were put on at 180000kms according to service history)

im getting prices in now, best so far is the local dodgy mechanic at $1500 all parts and labour. worst is $3200 from a specialist engine rebuilder.

Gee sounds a bit expensive to me? BTW don't underestimate your local mechanic. It's just a normally aspirated EA82 isn't it?

If you wanted more power, you could get EJ16,EJ18 EJ20 or EJ22 engines without any problems, maybe talk to Brain at subabits in Clayton and maybe he'll give you pointers, In Ringwood there is an EA82 engine at "Pay n Go" on Heatherdale Road, looks like it has been recently rebuilt as I could tell its very VERY clean but kilometres I cannot remember because I wasnt paying attention.

Otherwise you could get a low kilometre half cut from Japan, but will costs ya below $2grand

If the heads are fine, you always can change -

- Crank bearings
- new rings on pistion
- re-hone the bores
- new gaskets
- new pump
- new timing belt
- new or reco oil pump
- new welshe plugs
- new seals

Then you'll have a new engine!! All you need to do, read the book and get ideas, then go and shop around for parts prices and start a price war with traders (such as "Can you do better" or... can you please give me "Trades Prices" surely they'll give you trades prices.)

um.... or get 2nd hand engine for below $130 from wreckers such as Pay N Go & Pick A Part & Jolly's Rogers wreckers, add new oil seals & welshe plugs then put it in your subie.

If you want, there is an EA82 2WD sedan here at my local wreckers, engine is in VGC (gearbox is rooted though), I'm sure we could twist his arm? Cheap solution?

If ya wanna come down you can stay overnight.

If you put that one in, you could rebuild your old one at your leasure.

or just do the seals/belts/perishables on the 2nd hand one, put that one in and drive away

In my experiance, rebuilt high ks sube motors dont last that long anyway.
