carrying a long item on your roof??

Post by vidler » Mon Mar 16, 2009 2:37 pm

Gday, im just trying to find out the legalities of carrying long items on your roof, i know there's a limit to front and rear overhang which governs what size object you can carry. Have been looking for a while now and turned up nothing.

anyone here know what im on about? reason being i've bought a double racing ski thats 7.3mtrs long and it does look ridiculous on my car. I've made a support for the front so its solid as a rock but still looks suss:)

any help on rules and regulations would be great

Cheers, Jay

Show us a picture

Ive seen tradesmen carry pipes on utes that stick out nearly a metre, but they always have a red flag attached to the end

technically speaking the regs state that anything over 800 is illegal, and upto that point requires a flag.

recently the regs changed and i dont actually have an up to date version of it, and i work for a haulage company now but i can find out the exact rules tomorrow for u jay if u like

There is definatly rules regarding the overhang etc, perhaps put a post in the Subaru club section for Riksta, he is a truck driver and should be able to help you out, all though I am guessing the rules are diferent between states.

I'm not sure what the rules are here in Tas or where you are.
But We've had a double surf ski (the ones surf life savers use) with a single surf ski next to it. On familys little Corolla hatchback, regularly.
Quite a site, wish I had a pics!

Have any piccies?

ok jay technically it is illegal doesnt matter what u do..ahahaha...but not by much.

keep as much of the over hang over the front, and flag the rear and you should be fine :)

I think D3VIL meant 800mm overhang

In QLD you can have over hang front and rear no more than 1.2m, and you can have no more than 3.7m from the center rear wheel over hang at the rear without a red flag.

I dont know if it's the same in other states but I think it would be as this is for trucks as well as cars.

Hope this helps you out.

I remember looking at this last time I was in at VicRoads but unfortunately can't remember the specs for us over here without looking at them again. I do remember that you can't have anything overhanging from the car over a towed trailer...

Remember this Jay - If the cops want to ping you for something, they'll find it regardless of whether or not you've done all the right things...

Cheers

Thanks for the replies... Overall length of the forester is 4560mm, so if its 1200mm overhang front and rear that gives me 6960mm.... so im over by 300 odd mm. Unless the cops got a tape measure handy i should get away with it:)

Yeah this one is the surf life saving style double racing ski. A single ski would look ridiculous on a corolla:)

i recon its a case of if mr plod or the scalies got lucky last night . you see some rediclous stuff on the roads sometimes.but if you put a red flag on each end you could just act dumb and get away with it

worst case senareo fold it in half lmao.

How tall are cars allowed to be? Carry it vertical and avoid bridges :)

A few times Ive carried 6m of alloy bars on the ranks (my liberty) with a flag on the end of the bar, I dunno what the legal would be... It might be different to other states?
Cheers
