slipping clutch??

Post by AlpineRaven » Wed Mar 11, 2009 2:26 pm

hey guys, all last week my car has been slipping under acceleration, so bought new clutch kit last friday.
Planned to install new clutch in 2 weeks as we're going away on honeymoon next week.
Anyway since i last drove my car last friday, so didn't touch it until yesterday. It hasn't slipped at all yesterday and today, its ok under acceleration at the moment.
Its EJ22 liberty. What might be doing? Today i tested it in 5th gear it either stalls or moves forward. Is it the clutch on way out or something else? I'm a bit puzzled here.
Cheers

Nah it does not leak any oil or oil loss. I've already checked gearbox/engine joint this morning, its clean there.
I'm still driving it arnd waiting for it to wear out!

Is it a clutch cable system? Maybe the cable is having issues like seezing up or something like that. Like perhaps it seezed when the clutch was only half engaged the other day - pedal feel weird at all?

As far I know it isnt feeling weird (because I drive trucks/ute and my car that is manual), it seems to be "loose" both on hill holder and lever to cable section, it has small freeplay that area, I'll pull out the cable and check it out properly...

How could it be bent? I haven't removed the box since i bought it (well never have/touched it) the bearing is fine at the moment.

I'll give the cable a go tomorrow... what is the best way to clean it out & lube it? (subaru is the only car with cable i've had apart from hydraulic clutches)

I had my g/box out to put the l-series low range in we took the clutch out and the fingers were bent about 7mm the box hadn't been out before aswell

The thrust bearing only had one pin on the side weather that had anything to do with it i don't know

This sound like it would be the cause - nothing else could move in there...

Clutch Cable is fine...
So it leads something inside the box.... maybe the rear main seal could be weeping but I havent seen a sight of weeping oil yet.. Dip stick is still same level for 6000kms now.

After the Honeymoon in 2 wks time I'm gonna take the box out, machine fly wheel and replace rear main (since I don't know the history and very soon it'll hit 300,000kms so would be worth replacing.) If i am gonna remove the box, might as well replace the clutch.

If the fingers on the pressure plate are obviously uneven when you remove the gearbox then its probably a broken pressure plate. The pivot ring that the fingers pivot on when they are working snaps and the plate provides uneven clamping pressure on the drive plate resulting in a very strange pedal feel and the fingers sitting a lot higher on one side, and slippage as well, but if this was happening on your car AlpineRaven it would be a suprise for it to come good again.

Pressure plates can bend/break over time its nothing to do with something being wrong.

it can jsut happen and it bet it wasnt a cause of a thrust bearing clip.

Righto, removed the box and clutch last night, the clutch is all smooth and pressure place is weak.
So will fit new Velco one in tonight.

Clutch

Post by Smokey » Sun Jun 14, 2009 10:40 pm

How did u go APR? My EJ22 96 Liberty (250K) clutch is starting to slip every now and again. Adjusted the cable today, but there is nothing left to adjust.

Am debating weather this is something I want to do myself. Happy to take the box out but don't know what to look for when its in front of me.

yeah mine is going really well, been towing trailers lately and it works well, no more slipping...

If you're in 5th on stationary and try drive off in 5th, if it slips - its on its way out or if it stalls then you know its something else... But again it sounds about the age as it might not have been replaced before?
