L Power Steering Pumps ?

Post by discopotato03 » Fri Jan 30, 2009 11:20 am

My RX recently spat a power steering pump and I replaced it with a used one .

Can they be rebuilt or are they just replaced with a new unit ?

Cheers A .

Yeah you can get power steering pumps rebuilt. My mate got his WRX one done. They have seals and bearings that can be renewed. I assume an L series one would too.

a visit to your local Subaru dealer should show you the individual bits you can get for the various L series steer pumps. My seal was ex Japan so went aftermarket match up. Did the job. The original had a little ring in the centre of the outside edge to locate or hold seal in place better. The replacement did not..err just chucked a coupla Vortex pumps...

The used pump I found is from a 92 carbed L wagon and yess it's got the circlip in front of the sealed bearing .

When I compared the "new" and old they are different , the boss where the pulley shaft exits is longer and the shaft/spline diameter is larger than my original (86 build) pump . Its pulley is bolted to a four legged cross piece with the female spline in the middle where the original pumps pulley is one piece .

I had to reuse the first "S" shaped section of steel pipe out of the pump because the later one didn't line up with the flare nut union .

There is an early and late pump and the later one is probably the one to have , if I can find another I'll try to get it rebuilt .
I didn't have time to look when I grabbed the temp one but I'd like to know if early Lib pumps are same or similar to later L series ones .

Cheers A .

BTW , don't put up with a leaking pump any longer than you have to because it makes a hell of a mess underneath the engine and gearbox . Dont ask ...

My subie parts guy [ ONYA Bruce! ] seems to think many small changes occured between SUPER and UNLEADED, the power steer pump differences were one of them thought to be. To throw a spanner in that theory is my 85 GLTA shell had unleaded fitting and labels - in prep for mid 86 rules ? Or the turbos were already kitted out for ULP and they were not gonna mod them for a year for us so we got it early ?

I think there were lots of detail changes from early 87 on and I'd say it had a lot to do with tightening emissions legislation .
They went to full management with the EFI cars (4 plug system) because tighter controls is cheaper than engine design updates .

I remember reading that in my model of Skyline the RB25 went through three revisions of electricals and minor accessory drives to meet emissions standards . One of them involved a different power steering pump which placed less load on the engine at idle for emissions reasons .

The later EA82 pump uses the same pulley diameter as the early one so the differences could have been for durability reasons (two V belts leaning on it reasonably hard) or possibly because they could have common units on different engines/models .

Cheers A .
