3sp 4WD auto information
I was thinking of upgrading the 2wd auto in my leone to a 4wd type.
I was just wondering, is it possible to drive in 4wd mode on hard surfaces?
My plans are to mate the 3sp auto to an EJ20, and 4wd would be preferable (to prevent wheelspin as much as possible)
Im also thinking that if i cant use 4wd all the time, what if i replace the 4wd switch with a duty cycle controller to vary the amount of torque sent to the rear, much like the 4sp EAT's do.
Will do a little searching to see what i come up with

if it the 3 peed auto 4WD of the L series you are working your mind with - STOP here.
Mine has trouble even thinking about turning the car around on dirt/ grass so much so that the function of the switch on the dash to auto select 4WD whenever the wipers are on or kickdown switch is activated or the brakes are applied - whole thing is over ridden if esrever (read it in reverse!) gear is selected. Select 4WD on the gearstick has no reverse over ride and I often now find self automatically switching off when reversing and turning

The later model 'L' series ran a "Auto 4wd" - switch headlights, wipers etc on & it engaged 4wd.
I have a rebuilt 3spd in my Royale Turbo. I wish it was a 4 speed - it just rev's to hard at 100Km/hr. Other than that it is great to drive around town.

my 3/87 turby sedan has that box Xtreme says is fitted to later models, not checked if 4WD works with headlights yet ! It is nice to drive without shifting gears but yeah up to 4000 at 100kph ain't good, though drops to about 3300 with no accel
As Steve says, front diff 3.45:1 with the rear at 3.7:1

So i might be better going for an EJ 4sp auto. My only problem will be getting it to fit, im not lifting it.
Ben did suggest i just put lifting blocks on the engine and gearbox. it would give me extra clearance and would put a bit of negative camber on the front wheels too.
Anybody know if a EA82 4EAT will fit under a leone? (i have a feeling that they are similar in size to an EJ4sp seeing that they are almost the same mechanically)

Mine does 3300rpm @ 100kms/hr on the GPS....

Talking to Ben this-afternoon, he said that the 3sp auto has a multiplate clutch thats controlled by oil pressure, so there is still hope.
And yes i thought that 4000rpm at 100kmh is a little high, the 2wd 3sp in the leone does about 3200 at 100kmh.
What do EJ 4sp auto's rev at 100kmh? Around the 2800-3000 mark?

if the 4 speed AWD auto from later L Series turbo is the 4EAT I really don't think you will want one. LTurbo seemed to be very happy to exchange his with a 5 speed manual (hope he gained econonmy benefits, performance and lost a few kilos. I felt really good to then dispose of same box myself (then felt rather guilty as it was great internally) as I was tripping over it too often and in total the tranny and its converter and say 5 litres of fluid weighed about 110 kg - nice way to evenly lower your car

1. Use the 3sp fwd until i can come up with an alternative
2. Find a 3sp 4wd and mod it (modify pressure to transfer clutch) to give pseudo awd
3. Modify the transmission tunnel to fit a later EJ 4EAT (aparently a EA auto bell housing bolts onto an EJ auto tranny and vice versa)

I remember seeing an EJ auto for sale by bratgeebah, but he said pick up only.
There was an EA auto but it got scrapped i think.
My biggest issue with the EJ auto is fitting it under the sedans tranny tunnel without major issues

The later model auto should fit in the tunnel as the L's had a larger tunnel than the earlier My series. The L series autos are not the most robust and you really need to look after them or they will fail again and again. If you are going EJ use the 4eat thet the Ejs come with you will end up with a better setup and it will be more ecconomical as well.
