EJ wiring cut down questions

G'day all,

These questions relate to the 3rd page of my thread about Ruby Scoo's EJ conversion.

I've pulled out all the EJ wiring to start cutting down the loom. The questions I have are:

1) Do I retain the EJ underbonnet fuse box, if so where does it go in an L series engine bay?

2) Where do I find the oil and temp sensor wires that go to the dash board? - I don't have the EJ dash cluster

3) Do I need to place fuses between the L wiring loom and the EJ wiring loom to protect the EJ wiring?

4) Is it difficult to retain the EJ head light wiring to use in the L series as well as the cruise control?

5) Do I need to use a pin out list to work out which wire is which?

6) Do I make the the EJ wiring follow the EA MPFI wiring loom or do I lay the EJ wiring along a different route?

Not if you just want to run the motor. It is not needed.

If it is an early loom then you will have a White with green trace (Temp) and a Green with white trace (oil) coming from the engine. Easiest way to connect these is to just use the pick ups form the original loom in the engine bay. The ones in the blue plug on the drivers side.

3) Do I need to place fuses between the L wiring loom and the EJ wiring loom to protect the EJ wiring?

Yes, on the two different power wires you will need to connect. One is hot at all times, the other is hot with ignition

4) Is it difficult to retain the EJ head light wiring to use in the L series as well as the cruise control?

Not at all. You are better off ditching the complete L wiring to the front and then wiring in the dash and rear end to the EJ loom.

5) Do I need to use a pin out list to work out which wire is which?

Depends which way you go. #1 question would dictate yes. #4 question then no.

6) Do I make the the EJ wiring follow the EA MPFI wiring loom or do I lay the EJ wiring along a different route?

It is personal preference. Also depends on if you strip the loom down or use it complete. Stripped down you can run it pretty well where you want. Complete loom would suggest you keep it the same shape.

i tryed posting the way i did mine but it confused even me.

a easy way is just working from interior side of the loom. find a plug that you know is not needed snip the plug then trace the wires as far as they go and snip them from were they come from, making sure only to snip the wire from the plug side of the join.

the only other wires if you choose to only run the motor, find and label are speed sensor, there is one to aid in cold starts and your sensors. these can be found with a pin out, label them and leave a bit of lenght so you can join them to your orig dash wiring (tach,temp,oil).

i all so use the main ignition relay and tryed to use the fuel pump off the orig loom (couldn't get the pump to work so used separate relay)

you'll figure it out i'm sure after doing one i could do many more quite easy. and im not that smarts

Wish you were closer mate, I really want this to work first time, but I'd also like to learn how to do it myself... That said I also want to get it done ASAP to get the motor in etc. You don't want to come over for a holiday for christmas do you?!

Anyway, I can send you the EJ wiring, a complete touring wagon wiring including dash loom to splice together.

Not if you just want to run the motor. It is not needed.

So to run the head lights and cruise, where does the fuse box fit under the L series box? I was given this loom and didn't pull it out of the liberty to see how it all fits, and I'm not sure when I'll be back down at a pick a part to check it out...

I have an MPFI touring wagon loom from an 88 wagon to splice the EJ loom to (not the current one that runs Ruby Scoo), no blue plug there but I also have access to the carbie '88 loom that Ruby Scoo originally had before I converted to MPFI that does have the blue plug you're talking about...

I'm guessing these two wires will be pretty obvious?

So, I'm thinking with this I'll keep the L series indicators and replace the head light wiring with EJ wiring, thus needing to keep the underbonnet fuse box... Is it difficult to get the EJ A/C wiring to work with the EA dash switches/EA A/C condensor box?

Depends which way you go. #1 question would dictate yes. #4 question then no.

I'm thinking of going with the #4 question idea at this point in time... Does this cover the two fuses on the main power wires or do I still need the two fuses?

Hmmm... I would like the wiring to look as factory as possible, so I'm guessing that I need to run it in-line with the EA wiring loom or where the old EA wiring loom ran.

I'm hoping to get hold of an RX L series dash - to run the oil pressure guage and amps guage should I be looking at extra wiring being added for the provision of these extra guages or are they already in the L series wiring system?

If you think about it you want EJ computer wiring, EJ headlight wiring, EJ AC wiring which includes thermo fans and EJ cruise control. There isn't a great deal left in reality.

I would say to ditch the L wiring completely from the front of the car, lay the EJ wiring in and then set about connecting the back end, dash lights and extra bits. It is going to be a fair bit of wiring either way. Doing it this way you can't stuff any thing up to do with the "options" that you are wanting. It is all original wiring and it will work as soon as it is in there.

Are your indicators and wipers on the dash or column? The Liberty column will fit in your car with minor mods which makes wipers and indicators very simple. They are the same length and spline but have a different mounting bracket. 15 minutes with a welder, a bit of steel and all is sweet.

The rest is basically wiring switches and idiot lights on the dash. There is quite a few wires there but if you take your time it is actually pretty straight forward.

I did the exact same thing when I EJ-T'd the brumby. The climate control and all that was fitted. It did take me a full day to wire the dash and rear of the car after that though. The dash I used was a touring wagon analogue dash so it had to be completely rewired any way.

Thanks Outback Bloke. How many wiring conversions had you done at this point and did you find it an easy job?

After converting my L to MPFI and being told it would have been just as much work to EJ it I now realise that its a little more involved than first thought

Quite a few. Stacks actually. By that stage it was very simple. Basically just a matter of doing it. I have done them both ways, stripped loom and complete loom, and I think the complete loom would be the easiest option for you for what you want to run.

If you were just trying to run the engine then a stripped down loom would be the way to go.
