Cam belt change procedure 1.8DL Leone..Help

Post by patanga » Sat Nov 29, 2008 6:37 am

Hi. New to this forum and in need of some urgent advice. I have recently sold my 1.8L DL (1985) and the new owner contacted me in a panic as he has miss timed the cam timing when he had a go at replacing the cam belt. He is in a remote area and so getting to a workshop is not a viable option. I believe he has some mechanical ability and should be able to rectify the problem with some knowledgable advice. Never having replaced a 1.8 cam belt I can't give him the info he needs. Can anyone help with the correct belt fitment procedure or a link to a set of manual instructions, schematics etc... Many thanks folks.

Your best bet is to get a Haynes or Gregories manual.

But here is a quick rundown.

Find top dead centre of Crankshaft. (there are 3 timing marks close together, the middle one is TDC)

Rotate the drivers side camshaft

Now rotate the crankshaft one hole turn till the 3 marks are re-aligned.

Now rotate the passenger side camshaft until the hole in the sprocket lines up the the slot in the top of the cam cover. Put belt on.

Rotate the crankshaft 2 whole turns and double check that the sprockets still line up to their respective marks.
