G'day folks,
Alex here & i'm new to the site. Folks i'll be the first to admit my knowledge on subaru's is limited to say the least this is why i am here. Am hoping there is someone here who can advise me in relation to converting a subaru brumby ute from manual to auto transmisson. Can this be done & where do i start. I have rung various wreckers & they tell me different things from buy subaru auto & take the gearbox out & fit it into the brumby to buy a gearbox of the shelf from a wrecker. Folks i have never concidered doing such a thing & frankly i haven't a clue. Any suggestions please?

Cheers for replying, however i have not bought a brumby as yet. Just wanting to know if at all a conversion can be done. I am looking at buying a brumby in the new year. What engine would you reccomend?

I don't know how well the autos fit I am having clearence issues at the moment but I don't have a lift kit in mine plus its bigger and bulkier than a standard one!

The common brumby has a 1.8l EA81 engine in it from factory whereas the 79,80,81 models came out with a 1.6l EA71 Nad the brumbys all came out as manual 4x4 but there are lots of engine swaps done.

To do the conversion you will need the auto, a flex plate (flywheel), probably a spigot bearing (cheaper and easier new), an oil cooler or auto radiator and oil lines to suit, possibly a transmission cross member, a tailshaft made to suit, plus a shifter itself and linkages. Anything else i've missed anyone?
Stupid me aswell as the torque convertor and all the nuts and bolts off the donor vehicle...

If you bought an auto coupe, sedan or wagon and swapped everything accross it should be easy enough. I don't know that it would be a good first project for a novice though it has been done before.
If you have the $, you might prefer buying a Liberty and paying someone to swap the 2.2, auto and awd running gear into a Brumby. That's been done before too but is a little more complicated.

I wired up an EA82T + 3 speed auto into a brumby with no lift kit so it can be done

A mighty thank you to all who replied, told ya i was a novice & i have a buddy who will help me & i'll be learning in the progress (i hope). Looking at buying a leone station wagon( was my last auto & familiar with it) then a brumby early next year (goin into hospital early dec). If all else fails i'll have a suitable mechanic to do it for me.
