EJ22 loom and computer to run an EJ20???

Post by El_Freddo » Tue Sep 02, 2008 6:11 pm

Hey EJ conversion nuts!

I'm parts gathering for my EJ conversion. I'm wanting to know if an EJ22 loom and computer will run an EJ20 without any problems. I would be looking at using ALL sensors and wiring from the EJ22 loom to run the EJ20 motor.

I'm asking this as I've sourced an EJ20 that will be in the shed this weekend with any luck. The liberty loom for the EJ22 will be easier to hunt down than the impreza loom. Plus if this works there's no reason to drop in a fresh EJ22 later down the track IF ever needed/wanted. I'm hoping to be happy with just having an EJ for starters.

Also, will the EJ22 exhaust extractors bolt up to the EJ20 without any problems?

Any constructive input welcome - I'm not after a debate about why not just sourcing the EJ20 loom...

Cheers

i think the year of the ej20 will make a difference also. Sensors and things may change from the early ej20's to the later ones.

edit; that being said, you will always be able to modify your harness to suit.

Its ej18 stuff but it is a conversion up to 22.
Thanks for that... Will do some reading over dinner :D

So far it seems to be a goer...

That's just what I do - it keeps me young ;)

I don't have a donor car, just an EJ20. I know were there are plenty of libs to part out from, but not any impreza's...

Also, reading the USMB about the EJ18 to EJ22 jobs as posted by the postie, it seems that the EJ22 computer and loom will run the EJ20 motor, I may need the EJ22 manifold and wiring associated with it but it should be a goer - the MAF sensor will adjust the fuel injected for the EJ20 to run at the proper fuel air ratio.

Does this make sense to people? Anyone see any other problems I may encounter along the way?

it will run it. i have no doubt of that

will it run it well though? will fuel consumption or power suffer. will it idle rough.

I dont know. I do know if you use an EJ20 + EJ20 loom / computer it will all work as designed.

If your up for an experiment though - go for it!

97/98 EJ22 ecu's have a capacity discrimination pin to change from EJ20 to EJ22. I have never tried it but it is clearly marked on the wiring diagrams and the ecu ID's itself as an EJ20 when you plug the monitor in even though they are all EJ22's. This is Gen 2 series 2 only, it is a completely different pinout to the Gen 2 series one.

I don't know if i'll find one of them but if I do how do I tell that its a Gen 2 Series 2?

Thanks for that tip too, could make things interesting ;)

You will have to check the pinout carefully to ID the difference. It's not obviously different or anything, just all the pins layed out differently.
In 97 they started standardising the pinouts. The 2l,2.2,2.5,2.0T and 2.0TT manuals all had the same basic pinout. The turbos just had extra pins for there specific controls.

Another thing between (from what I noticed due my Libertys) from 1994 Series 1 Gen 2 Liberty & 1996 Gen 2 Series 2 Liberty is the wires colour codes are different (more headache!)

It's do-able. Well anything is do-able. But how much stuffing about do u want to do. It's possible (and i have seen it) that the harnesses and ECU and engine harness will just plug in. But as Alex has suggested... your likely to need to change stuff. It would be alot easier if you can source the correct stuff but if thats out of the question it could be done. Select your donor harness carefully.

Also you have said u want to run the EJ20 from an EJ22 ecu. I think this would run but not to it's best. I assume the programing in each ECU is different in each because of the capaicity of the motor. Changing and swapping sensors wont trick the ECU into knowing you have a physcailly smaller motor plugged in.

Thats my thoughts anyhows.

From a wiring cutting down point of view. Most EJ NA harnesses (4 plug) i have cut down the pin outs have been identicle... and the only things that have been different are optional pins you wont be using anyhows.

I'd rather go for the EJ22 loom as that will allow me to go up to a larger engine later on if I ever have the desire for it as all the hard work will be done.

I got the motor today, it needs some sensors, a cam cover and a bit of a make over - I've been told its been sitting around for a long time - it still turns over without a problem and feels like it has good compression.

On my way home I dropped into centre rd wreckers where there's more liberty's than anything else subaru related! I was scouting out part prices and what is currently available, will need to save for the bits to get later.

Thanks Dave, I think I'll take a risk with it and see how it goes. Would leaving the EJ20 injectors help out the ECU with fuel delivery (meaning the potential for no problems at idle or in the rev range)? To me in theory this should work out fine - reality will be the tester.

This EJ20 may turn out to be the thing I needed to get the project underway as I'm still keeping my eye out for that cheap liberty, I may even ask the guys at the wreckers for a price on a particular unit and see what they can come up with...

Cheers

On the same subject, i have a ej25 dohc.. Can the computer and loom from an ej22 sohc be used on my motor.. im assuming an custom retune/chip should fix any fueling problems..

Read the above threads from stamp licker - that'll answer your question with no problems... I think the last one was the most useful ;)
