shifter slop

Post by Dean.nabbe » Thu Jul 03, 2014 10:11 am

my shifter had some serious slop.. in gear it almost felt like it was in neutral..
i bought a genuine bush kit and change the bushes etc circled in the picture but it's still just as bad.. any idea what else it may be?

Did you take a look at the fit between the shift fork (item 15) and the selector shaft of the gearbox? one or both components usually wear out where the shaft sits in the tube, makes it real sloppy. Also if you still have the roll pin (item 16) replace it with a bolt and locking nut, tighten the crap out of it. If that still doesn't fix it you need to cut 2 slots in the selector fork tube on each side, so when you tighten the bolt it squeezes the tube down onto the shaft.
Will it ever end!?

the roll pin has already been replaced in the past.. i'll see if that needs tightening, if that doesn't work i'll try slotting it out.. thanks

Should have mentioned, don't cut slots down the whole length of the tube :o around half to 2/3rds does the trick.

times 2 for everything Silverbullet said, especially cutting the 2 slots and putting a bolt in instead of the pin.

eeeeew... attempted to take the fork out to cut it but it's gonna be harder than i thought.. exhaust has to come down first... and by the looks of the fork, someone had a go at it in the past and butchered it.. it looks a bit battered and nasty :(

Yeah mine wasn't very clean when I removed it. Exhaust stayed in place.

You will most likely have to drill a new hole in the shaft and this bracket then fit a new bolt with a locking thread nut on it. This gives a really good clamp that ensures it doesn't move.

Your Brumby will feel more like a sports car after this mod :D

i'm thinking i may have to weld up all the other holes or replace the pipe section of the fork.. i'll post a pic when i get it out...
gotta take the exhaust down, cant get any spanners/sockets on it with the exhaust bracket in the way...

i wasn't very hopeful, but thought i would still try Bennies suggestion to see if it would fix the slop, before cutting it off and welding a new pipe section to it..

Image

with a new bolt(with less blank) she squeezed down and the slop is gone... very happy... thanks Bennie, Silverbullet and Cliff.

Dear god what happened to that thing in a previous life? :o Very butchered, is that an attempt at welding I see?

If it goes loose again quickly try a nyloc locking nut.

Nice recovery mate! As SB has said, a locking nut will help this go the distance, if that nut loosens off you'll be back to square one before you know it!

Does it feel like a sports car now?

not my attempt at welding... i just took it off and cleaned it with carby cleaner(was all i had laying around)

i was gonna get a nyloc nut, but decided it was easy enough to do at a later date(ie, when i install the lift kit) wanted to make sure it was gonna work first.

feels much nicer now... i can actually tell the difference between being in neutral and in gear.. lol

Perfect! Exactly what I need while the car is on the hoist!
Mines got a bolt in it already but the nut on the bottom is gone... lol Time to use a locking nut I think and go from there ;)

EDIT: This worked a treat however I had a spring fall out.. I can see it goes on the selector but can't see where on the gearbox it attaches to??
The only issue I found after doing this mod is that I have to use two hands to force it accross enough to engage reverse. Other than tgat 1-4 is great. Very direct!

The spring fits in a slot on the driver's side. I can't remember what it is exactly what it is that it fits to though, could be ridge or a hole in the casting of the case.

It's a great mod! I'd say still a step below a 5spd conversion...

Cheers
