Flywheel modification for EJ engine to EA gearbox
Flywheel modification for EJ engine to EA gearbox
hi,
what exactly do i have to tell the machine shop to modify in regards to the EA flywheel. i know the holes have to be elongated and the flywheel made thinner, but by how much?
cheers,
adam

The fly wheel does not have to be any thinner if you are using a 12mm adapter. It is not a simple "this many mm" modification for the bolt holes. The EJ crank has the holes equidistant around the spigot. The EA is not. Therefore each hole is modified differently. Get hold of a bolt plate from an EJ auto flex plate. Take that with you to the shop and tell them you want the EA holes to be the same as it.
Or you can file the holes out yourself with a bastard file. You don't have to be 100% accurate because the centre part of the flywheel alligns it correctly anyway. Took me about 3 hours to do just the other day - see my WackyBug thread in members rides.
But yeah a machine shop will probably give a better result but there are heaps of people who've filed their own out and are feeling no ill-effects as a result. (Subarino's Hatch, Alex's Wanky Wagon, 4MUFF's Leone sedan for example).
I have an EJ Auto flex plate you can borrow if you want.
