Ball joint replacement brumby

I replaced the ball joints on my friends Brumby the other day and found that getting the ball joints bottom of the steering knuckle was a hellish job. After a lot of juggling I eventually got them in. Is there a easy way to replaces these ball joints. I tapped mine in with a cold chissel something I wasn't happy about.

Normally just tapping a screwdriver or suitable wedge into the split on the inward face opens it up so the ball joint falls out easy.
