WA fellas please read.

Post by Outback bloke » Wed May 03, 2006 6:32 pm

The following is an email I received today. Thought one of you blokes may be interested or know of some one that can do this.
I was chasing some information. I currently own an 1991 RS Turbo sedan but am looking for a second car as a bit of a work car/ tow my tailer/ minor beach work. I am keen on an L Series Suby but know they are reasonably underpowered. Do you know of anyone in W.A. that does the EJ22 conversions for these cars and what the approximate costs for the conversion ?

Is there any advantages to going down this route in terms of 4wd performance ? or would I just be better off going for a early 90’s liberty that is AWD with the EJ22 in it and just adding a liftkit ? As I understand it only the L Series Subys have low range. Can you keep this low range option when going the conversion to the EJ22, what about in auto form ?

Any information that would aid my decision would be much appreciated J

Regards,

Tom Rimmer

Tony? I thought his name was Tom

Tom if you are reading this, yes there are many options in what you've said, all it comes down to is what you want. Nearly any combination is possible.

I'd encourage you to come along to a meet, whenever we have one, and check out the varied group of cars we have and see what tickles your fancy.

hey guys. now a forum member and cheers for replying to the above post to my original Email. Basically its time for the RS to go and to make way for something newer at the end of the year (considering an XR6 Turbo amongst other things). Currently though I work about an hour from where I live and am looking at getting a second run about and can't decide to go with an L Series wagon or the slightly later AWD libertys, the libertys drive heaps nicer but I want it to do a bit of light 4wding and towing my trailer and trailbike about.

What is the best option ? (I have considered just getting one car to do the lot, such as a new Forest GT but I think having the two cars will be more "useful")

Depends how much time you have and what your budget is I suppose.

A later model liberty is a much nicer car, drives better, more powerful etc. I think it is a little more expensive to install a lift kit into a Lib.

An L series is cheaper to buy and cheaper to modify, but that doesn't include power upgrades. An EJ conversion is quite an undertaking but is well documented on this forum and there is loads of hands-on help in WA. An N/A EJ conversion is easier, especially if you use an adaptor plate to the standard L series gearbox. But of course then it won't drive as nicely as an AWD car.
There is always the option of doing an EA82turbo conversion to an L series, this is a very cheap and extremely easy conversion.

you should come up and see some of the ej22 L's in perth (well ones an ej25 now), they are very nice.

Check the pics of vidlers in the photos section it would be one of the best examples id say.

Cool, I will come up and do that Matt, didn't know you used these forums! Yeah I would be keen to have an EJ 22 converted L Series that would be a good combo i think. How do they go 4wdn ? especially if they are auto without low range ? (i would prefer an auto cos i am slack and it is a going to be a daily driver :)

How do the later Liberty AWD's go for 4wdn with a lift kit ? are they ne good ? Saw a early 90's liberty down here with only 160,000 on it for $5g (don't know if it was a fronty or an AWD tho)

Hey Tom,
Im rolling in a ej22 lseries with a d/r awd liberty box, goes sweet and so far has taken everything Ive thrown at it. It's also my daily driver. Certainly the auto would b nicer in the traffic but theres just somethin about slammin gears that gets you goin  so I reckon it will be manual for me forever. Where abouts are you located... (I knew a tom rimmer near bunbury)
Cheers,
Allan

The i dont think any of the wa crew are running autos but the ej22 with either the l series dual range or the awd lib dual range has proven to be pretty tough combination 4wding .. download some vids from

http://members.iinet.net.au/~carladb/

The white wagons, blue hatch are ej22s and one of the red wagons is an ea82 turbo .. and the other red wagon is mine which is standard.

then theres a few others im not 100% sure about.

if you wanna see how they go we offroad a fair few of us will be heading out somewhere on sunday in a few weekends time. bring the rs along .. tehe.

yeah 90% of the time it will be driving in traffic so thats why i am keen on an auto, besides the performance car I purchase in place of the RS will be manual so i will get my gear slammn thrills from that.

Due to it just being a run about really the max budget is around $5g....

No one has commented yet what the 90's onwards AWD Libertys are like offroad ?

How much is the L Series EJ22 conversion cost ? does anyone in Perth do it for a fee ?

haha nice vids Matt, very cool.... why is the red car always bogged or getting towed out ? and who chose that shocking piece of 80's music ?
Keen to attend on this Sunday outing u were talking about :)

My RS went well on the trip we did up in the hills only problem was I burried the front spoiler in a gully on one of the muddy hill tracks.

yeah that could be something to do with the standardness of my car.... but i still have fun..

Suba has a Lib RS wagon he is going to use as 4wd and its auto.. it needs alift more than the l series does and has some plastic on the front that is pretty low .. but other than that i think it would be much stronger than an l series

Cool, mebe I will look for one of the slightly newer libs, there doesn't seem to be a great deal difference in price. What is a lift kit worth for em ? would need lift, some decent 4by tyres n shit. They would go orright on the beach eh ?

yep ... they would be pretty good on the beach.. a rear lsd might be worth looking at.

liberty lift kit is $510 and l series is 460 from byb . so not a lot of difference there and think the 4wd tyre range is better for the liberties.
