not all dealer servicing the same ??

Post by steptoe » Fri Jul 15, 2011 3:52 pm

a suggestion put to me at an unnamed dealer of an unnamed brand or brands, that some dealers may choose not to use genuine consumables in their service division - it's up to them. Wonder if they inform customers that the perception they are paying top dollar they are getting manufacturer supplied and endorsed ingredients - may be wrong ??

Most dealer agreements would not allow that

the other brand dealer i work at uses genuine parts, including additives. If a customer specifically asks for non-genuine then we source it for them.
Of course the cars that get serviced etc for the used car side of things get the cheap aftermarket stuff.
My opinion is people bring the car to a dealership to get genuine service by the book using genuine parts. If these parts are substituted for after market parts then charged out at the genuine prices then the customer is being cheated.

I have no problem using aftermarket parts in my cars. (2 of the cars i cant get genuine parts for anyway!)

I have a certain respect for genuine parts such as seals, gaskets & hoses, coolants too now for that matter. Respect continues when I pull apart cars that are 20 years old or more and am only just renewing genuine , likely original, tie rods and ball joints, but renewing with aftermarket stuff. The aftermarket has won hands down with bushings, filters, plugs and other ignition gear

The longer I've worked at my current position, near nine years now, the more respect I have for Subarus genuine parts, I've pulled a few old ej's apart for myself and seen 100s? go through the workshop over time and the difference I see especially with coolant !! Actually astounds me.
badly modified rexs galore with all the things I would expect to see in my garden irrigation system under the bonnet, at the other end we have cars with well over half a million klms on the the clock that we regularly service with genuine parts, Mr Fuji has my deepest respect for his research and development . I'm not saying this to promote my position, I leave that to my signature, :-D this is just a personal opinion

My brother was visiting me when I lived in NQ and the alternator died on his Commodore, the Holden Dealer replaced it under Warranty. Later it died again and Holden refused to replace it under Warranty as the NQ dealer had used a non-genuine replacement.

My brother tried all legal avenues to get it replaced under Warranty but they all said he was up the creek without a canoe.
And that was back in the 90's.

What got me thinking about all this is the fact my latest desired form of transport has its passport stamped by the same dealer over 20 years and 128,000 km, a four year gap of no service records supplied by owner #2 who has had several repairs done responsibly. Oughta see all the rusted out water pipes and hose connections.

Look after a new car and its coolant can stay looking good and all its pipeware pristine for years - seen so many Toyotas sporting their red coolant and no rot at all, same with a lot of subies including the donor of the water pump to radiator hose that I used to replace Vorts religeous one this arvo - same age, like new, also had its same dealer service stamps first twenty years.

I think I really expected same pristine stuff on my Vort given similar history and age. Seems to be the downfall after 24 years, rusted out pipes losing coolant or orange water anyway - tends to go that way after an internal steam clean - and a ten dollar radiator cap that was needed due to no pressure held by 'original' cap.

An old friend asked me why I bought another old car. Coz it is red, four stud rims, turbo subie. Hell, compared to her the Vort is a spring chicken - she is 64 years older than my Vort, what cheek :-)

my ej22 block a couple of years ago , I bought it traded from an outback NSW farmer who'd had it for 200 000 + klms and looked like muddy bore water with a thick layer of mud through almost every part of the cooling system, never saw a dealership until I got it and swopped in genuine too late and blew the head gasket here in the picture

Genuine coolant all the way
