Troubleshot - non sube

Post by steptoe » Sun Aug 15, 2010 12:56 pm

Mate has a Mazda built Ford badged Escape in his shop with a history. Owner first got a tribute off dealer, had problems not resolved so dealer swapped with for the ford variant which is now subject to troubleshooting. Had some minor symptoms cruising at about 80 kph I think and a few other odd intermittent performance issues. Mate looks at things - spark plugs - front bank of east west V6 has incorrect plugs and a few non motorcraft over plug coils. The rear bank has correct motorcraft sparks and mix of coils. Rear needs inlet manifold off for access so explains original or genuine correct type of plug. Someone has numbered coils in physical sequence not firing order or cylinder ID. Took for a drive with new plugs same intermittent problemns ...then go to restart it and it won't rev past 2000 just bogs down. ECM light comes on.... Letting it idle to operating temp incase things change then there was a phhffft noise then intake air suck or other noise. We find a reed switch style thingymy with two pipes off EGR pipe insulated with short silicone hoses and electrical connection had melted and fallen off EGR little tubes. Exhaust air is hot and pumping out these little tubes so hot little wonder the reed switch thing melted. Give it a few revs and it pumps more heat out...

CLICK !!

Blocked meow?

Pull engine pipe off meow to find honeycomb stuff building up in front of where we expect to find it ....hmmmmmm....start up and she now revs and nice exhaust note too :)

Look further and find just off exhaust manifold is small style cat with O2 sensorr, one on each bank. Now sort of found the no power problem , wondering if it is also the intermittent problems customer had, wondering if same is due to previous owner trading it in at 160,000km, after someone trying some new spark plugs, borrowed coils , maybe off a maz part numbered beasty getting temp fix?

Wondering if incorrect plug heat range can kill cats?

Glad I have one simple car -- the Brumby :)

Yep these must have cats straight off the exhaust amnifold as well as under the drivers seat. Last cat came out and unloaded a lot of non violet honey comb crumble
