difference in ej cam sizes

Post by TOONGA » Mon Oct 05, 2009 10:39 am

here is a question on the EJ engine cam profiles I have an EJ16 that I want to run with a distributor and a carby

please please please don't tell me to get an ECU and injectors I want to do it this way

the engine I have has no notched end for the distributor

my question is could I put the cams out of an EJ 22 into the motor or and EJ 18 or are the profiles too different

would I have to go with an EJ 16 cam or set of ej16 cams

I know that drivers side EJ22 does have a notch at the end of the cam. Cant help with the profile and i wouldnt have a clue where to start to find the profile, best place would be PDF documents on these engines?

There's a PDF factory manual floating around on the net that might have some specs.

I'm fairly certain my EJ18 had a notch in the end of one of the cams, unfortunately it's in Perth and I'm not, so can't help you with measurements atm.

Ive searched through every manual Ive got (service manuals, gregorys, haines, technical bulletins) and I have found very little to do with cam profiles in any of the stuff i have

Im going to keep looking

I don't reckon there would be much of a difference if any.

Run with a set of cams that have the notch - get them re-ground to the specks you want if you need to. Simple really.

Im not worried about the EJ16 cam sizes I dont believe that they would change from engine to engine

I was thinking if I couldnt get a set of EJ16 cams could I use either a set of EJ18 or EJ22 ones or would the valve open and closing duration be too different

Ive not found too mcuh information so far on the ej16 motors

but have amassed quite a bit of info on the EJ22 motors which I will upload when my download quoata renews

from the liberty pdf I downloaded off here somewhere...

in open/close ex open/close
EJ22 2/60 50/16
EJ20 4/52 48/12
EJ18 12/58 58/12
EJ16 9/51 54/6

they do however list the EJ18 and EJ16 as being available with carbies, so they are probably not aussie spec.
