sticky 4wd L series
sticky 4wd L series
My 92 L series works fine in all the gears high and low, but refuses to disengage from 4wd back to 2wd, the lever just won't move, I have to rock it back and forth and wrench at it eventually it moves, but it's very annoying.
Is there some plastic joint or something that has to be replaced or adjusted?
thanks.

This behaviour is by nature for these cars. Don't wrench the lever, this is bad for everything. It happens because the L series gearbox is locked front to rear when 4x4 is engaged. On a sealed road the gearbox will start to bind up. It's why later model AWD Liberty's have an LSD in the centre instead so they can stay in 4x4 on sealed roads without binding.
All you need to do is drive a few metres on an unsealed surface like sand or gravel and it should slip back into 2wd easy. Best to do it just before you get back onto bituman after you are done offroading. Also make sure you've been driving in a straight line for a few metres, turning will also cause extra load on the gears and difficulty (this tip is in the glovebox owner's manual).

Yep this happens to me a lot, i had 3 L series over the years and they all did it. What i found best to work is just before getting onto bituman like andrew says, i reverse the car slowly, very slowly and sharply push the leaver down in 2wd. Works great :P
Dont go crazy on the lever "rock it back and forth and wrench" as this is not good. Its just like andrew said, they bind up and you just want to gently unbund them :P lol
P.s be gentle and its gonna work and somethimes you may need to go at it a few times.
