Gen 2 g'box ratios same as L series?

G'day all,

Basically as the title asks - Is the Gen 2 Liberty gearbox ratios the same as the L series? I know they both have 3.7 final (diff) ratios, but beyond that I'm a little bit lost.

If they are different, how would it effect the speed/rpm's with standard 13's?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i did have a look when i opened up my gearboxes, i've forgotten but have written it down at home, i'll get back to u tonight. I think they are or close.

This information is from Gen2 gearbox with 3.7 diff (from the one I have in my Liberty)
1st - 3.545
2nd - 2.111
3rd - 1.448
4th - 1.088
5th - 0.871
Rev - 3.416

(cant find the L series paper that I wrote down but its the same in the book i gave to you)

EDIT - Correction above - 5th gear - its 0.871:1

And from your L manual, for the L series 4wd (which differs from the 2 wheel drive):

First: 3.545 (39/11)
Second: 1.947 (37/19)
Third: 1.366 (41/30)
Fourth: 0.972 (35/36)
Fifth.: 0.780 (32/41)

So they are quite different and thus would have quite an effect I reckon. I'll think about this overnight and post a question or two tomorrow...

Hi El Freddo , those L Series ratios you posted are the RX Turbo ones and some say the late MPFI NA L's as well .

The ones AR posted are the same as carby L ones though I think L's used a 3.9 diff ratio .

Can't confirm but I thought S2 Libs had the ratios AR posted but with the 0.78OD 5th , I'm not certain about this though .

I can confirm that the close ratio or carby set with 0.87 5th/3.7 diffs/13" wheels makes for 70 at 3000 in 4th and 90 at similar revs in 5th .

Just had a look at 5th gearset, from gen 2 series 1 which is same as series 2 which i have in mine (98 box) its 34/39 which works out to be 0.871, that is why i have 0.825 5th ready to go in my gearbox when i get the chance.
That L series specs above must be turbo box.

Bennie raises a concern I have had regarding shoving EJ gearbox into MY and L series - 13 inch standard tyres and rims would possibly have an effect on top gear revs as EJ powered stuff from factory did not do 13's. Where they 14 inch at all or all just 15's?

Just to clarify, this is similar to the pet peeve raised recently with regards to people measuring fuel economy on "how much can I get to a tank". Technically it's the outer rolling diameter of the tyres that should be discussed here, not the size of the rims.

Bennie just how much longer are u planning to keep running 13s and what for? :)
I'd try and match your tyre size to roughly that which comes on the EJ car the gearbox is out of or larger once ur lift kit is happening.

stock tyre soze for the EJ boxes is 185/70R14

24"

You will easily fit these under an unlifted L with suspension in good nick.

Hmmm... We the table in AP's manual didn't say anything about the turbo model (other than the different low range and 3.7 ratio diff), but it did say that all carb'd L's were 3.9 ratio - where as after '87 they're all 3.7. After checking the publication date, 1984, I'm guessing this manual is written for the early L series units... From what I've learned quite a few suttle changes occured after, or during 1987.

I wonder how Venom gets on with his L - he's running an EJ25 with AWD gearbox, Lapsed's old gear.

The 13 inch rim is wrapped in 175/70's. Why the 13's still AT? Cos I want to keep the L looking stock while I sort out some lift, bigger rubber with some engineering certification. The cops in bendigo would probabily leave me with at least a canary if it wasn't a red sticker. From what I understand its a lot different over here with police and vehicle modifications - that and Bendigo is now known as the "hoon capital" of victoria (its also been written on the hwy into and out of town by some vandals - pretty funny though); the police bring their recruits up to do on the spot roadworthys. A 3 inch lifted, 27 inch tyre weilding L series would be a field day for a copper doing an inspection! So once an engineer is sorted I'll have larger rubber and lift sorted. This will also help me with insurance costs.

Another question: I'm looking at building a 4.1 ratio box later to go with the lift and 27's.

The questions is, which 1st to 4th gears would be best and where do I find them (what gearbox) and which 5th would be best for highway crusing, again, where would I find it?

I'm currently using the AWD dual range box with the lockable centre (is that an RX box? i dunno) that schultzie had in his sedan. Still needed an apdapter plate. I don't have a tacho so i can't really comment on the revs, apart from not been able to notice a difference. Going from front wheel dive to AWD on the other hand :) Now i have no more torque steer, which was diabolic after the EJ25 went in. Plus i can get the ass end sideways.

Yep... You could use normal ratios from 1st to 4th, but 5th can be found in turbo gearboxes (ie. wrx etc), there is several ratios out there but ensure the keyway fits.
