RX L Series Tailshaft vibration issues .

Post by discopotato03 » Mon Jan 26, 2009 10:52 am

Hi all , had this problem ever since I had it (rear half) and the diff out some time back .
I thought I fixed it by lining the paint mark up - think I had it in the wrong way round .

I have an L wagon tailshaft to play with and will soon be to the driveline specialists to get that one "sorted" .

I'd like to look into having replacable uni joints fitted and wonder if anyone has done this with a two piece L tailshaft .

Some Nissans use the same gearbox end slip joint and I happen to have an Aust Bluebird shaft with one of these . I'll have to get hold of a rear uni joint and hooks to suit my R160 diffs companion flange and sort a middle one and and fix any probs with the center bearing and rubber cushion thing .

This would have been lots easier if these tailshafts didn't have staked unis in them .

Any suggestions most welcome , cheers A .

BTW tube sizes need to stay the same because the new exhaust is just clear underneath the tailshaft .

so your asking what to do about the vibration issues? sounds like you already have the solution - take it to a driveline specialist (any driveshaft place) and have it 'sorted".
Any half decent place will be able to replace the "non replaceable" uni joints with replaceable ones - this is not a big deal at all, and not rare. Cost me roughly $100 per uni joint when I had it done to a 2-piece L series tailshaft quite a while ago.

I just thought someone may pass on which alternative joints are suitable to have fitted - as in the hooks .

Cheers A .

Ah, that is something I'm going to explore soon as one of my shafts is in need of more joints replaced, I definitely want to see if something more beefy can be custom fitted.

Someone here had a single piece shaft made up here a few years ago and im pretty sure he got it made with Falcon Uni's as they where pretty close to the original hole size. I know its a single piece not a 2 peice but the reason Falcon one where used was of the close size to original ones. Judging by the size it would have been early falcon.

The 5MT L tailshaft is now at Sydney Driveline Services and should have it back towards the end of the week .

I'll basically have a new rear section with Aust spec Datsun yokes and Holden type spider centers . These (XU1 spec ones) don't have the grease passage drilling in the cross piece so are stronger than the greasable ones .
They want to use the original front section and center bearing except with another Aust Datsun yoke and a Nissan slip joint yoke I supplied .

Not going to be a cheap exercise but at least I can service the thing when it never wears out ... And no don't ask .

To crown the day off Ellies spat a power steering pump and is leaking all over the front of its engine . Please tell me L's with dying PS pumps dont give weird driveline type vibrations ...

I picked the new shaft up this afternoon and it looks real good . The only thing that concerns me now is if the length of the front half is right because the front yoke/slip joint is longer being a Nissan one . Fingers crossed they took that into account and moved the front uni south to allow for the extra long slip joint section .

If I get time I'll measure them up over the weekend , anyone have an L 5MT tailshaft they can measure the total length ?

Cheers A .
