L series front end noise ?

I have a strange loud noise coming from the front end of the car. It is a hard to explain, but it is a loud metalic scrape/rubbing grind.
I had the car up on a hoist today, ran the car in first and second, turning the wheels from side to side, but no noise. Everything else under the car looked as it should apart a tiny bit of play in the steering rack. Then I drove off and a couple of km down the road and it starts again. Cv joints were done 9 months ago and the boots look fine. 2 week ago I put new discs and pads on.

Try greasing the hubs were the driveshafts go through as well.
