L-series TT(twin turbo) setup

gday all.

i have a dream. This consists of
1. wanky wagon
2. a twin turbo frontcut

i have afew concerns about the do-ableness of this conversion though. I know of only one other l-series in Australia with this conversion and that is Fatz's wagon.

The main issue i can see is the cross member. Not really sure what to do in this regard. Would scalloping the xmember to fit the dump pipes would weaken it too much?

I also plan on using the l-series d/r gearbox and seeing how it copes with twins. I spose an awd ej d/r will be on the cards soon because i cant see the ea box holding together for too long. Curious on what pressure i should try and get the pressure plate beafed too, and what clutch disc to run.

Also with the intercooler, would i better off going a waic or keeping the tmic. Keeping in mind i want it to spool up as quick as possible becasue after all, its a 4x4.

my current radiator should be able to cope with the TT setup, as its a dual core based on a single turbo EJ radiator.

would my VL turbo bosch fuel pump be able to cope with it?

thoughts/opinions/any other ideas i should be considering?

im also aware that twins wouldnt be the best for offroad situations, but i just like the idea of having a lifted twin turbo wagon :)

The VL pump will cope with the fuel demands and I reckon the cross member should be able to withstand the changes(they are pretty tough - I used two old EA82 ones for a trailer ramp - it was a Mini though and only 670kg...). Let us know what goes on - I am sure it will go like a scalded puss!!

I am going for a posting to the West end of 2009 so I can tap into this wealth of knowledge over that way...

Crossmember - pretty sure you just need a normal L series turbo one or scallop yours out. Fatz is using an L series crossmember.

Clutch - get the pressure plate beefed out to at least 2200 and you will be fine. The TT motor puts out a similar amount of power to an normal EJ20G just delivers it in a pretty different way afaik.

Personally I would get a WAIC so you don't need to chop a scoop into your bonnet (attracting too much cop attention etc). A waic won't really change your spool times over the stock tmic.

Radiator - yep should be fine although you will need to get it modded a bit to accept the turbo header tank.

VL turbo fuel pump - yep, fine. Although I would consider finally setting your car up with the EFI fuel tank and lines rather than squeezing it thru the carby lines.

Personally I think EJ20turbos ARE the best for offroading. The boost lag is NOT an issue. They have butt-loads more power so it's win-win :) You certainly don't have a lack-of-power issue offroad at the moment though so this is mostly going to be a fun upgrade for on-road.
I rekon your main problem will be busting gearboxes and CV's. And I would consider bracing your radius rod lift blocks forward to the engine crossmember blocks...driving around in front wheel drive with that much power will take it's toll on those radius rod captive nuts over time. You may have to add some bracing to your rear diff hanger too.

are you serious front drive with ej20TT? thats insane. I think you'd be stupid not to go with an ej AWD setup from the beginning.

It's an offroader, L series gearbox is the way to go. Just have to take it fairly easy on the road in front wheel drive.
You can make them last a while. My mate Warren's car ran one behind an EJ20turbo for about 4 years before finally changing it out - it was still working fine but was getting noisy!

if i had a dollar for everytime you have changed your mind about what to replace Wanky's motor with........well, i would probably have atleast $10 by now LOL.

just get another 22 and slot her in.

ye do it n then when u get really serious change it to lib suspension or go buy a liberty wagon

IMO I would be staying clear of the twin turbo set up & not even wast your time in the L series .Think of a liberty wagon as an up grade , better looking , better suspension , direct fit for a turbo motor .The L series you have would be a good entry level machine for some one to get into while you just step up in the range.

you would be better with one turbo , VF10 or TD04 may be a VF12

Just curious I have the TT and although it uses a different spline count on the C.V's I can change this!
Wanting to know what length or type of shaft people have used between the auto and Lib hubs in a brumby will I need custom shafts made?

No offence, but it is alex we're talking about here... I'd second the notion of an EJ AWD gearbox in there...

Why not "just" bolt a turbo to the side of the EJ22 he's putting in?

As he's rebuilding the EJ22 it would be the best time to invest in the good bits to bolt a turbo to the thing. Biggest problem in my eyes would be the engine management system.

At least then Alex would have something a little original in the L if that's what he's after.

yep another ej22 sounds the go. you were very happy with the pulling power of the previous one and its an easy swap for mr lazy bones alex.
