is it possible to put a ej22 gear box onto a ea81 engine or are the ratios incompatible? (stock rear diff)

Cant see why you couldnt , the ratio's have nothing to do with the engine .
However you will have to make sure that the rear diff matches the ratio of the gearbox , most of the MY series (ie brumbys and 80's era wagons ) came out with either a 3.9 or 3.7 rear diff.
Why do you want to go with an EJ22 gearbox in preference to the MY or L Series box.

I think the EJ boxes are 12mm longer than the EA ones so it won't fit. Well, not without a fight!

It will fit, you need to make an adapter plate.

They can be hard to come by but certainly do exist. They come in Single or Dual Range and have a Diff Lock. Final ratio is 3.7
