Finally found the noise....

Post by AlpineRaven » Tue Feb 05, 2008 1:01 pm

Today (day off from work) I was getting frustrated and the mechanic was gonna charge me $77 (went to ask yesterday) just to find the noise where it was coming from... so today I put my Liberty on the ramps and went to find out where its possible knocking....

One mate said I have noisy rattly diff - I didn't believe him, I knew the noise was coming from rear somewhere and could feel vibrations coming from rear specially on rough or bumpy roads or under gear (ie. 5th at 30kmh causes violent vibrations) sound like metal to metal knocking/worn rubber mounts (it wasn't) etc... but it turns out to be the rear diff carrier mounts shown pic below -

This is where car places like to put hoist/jack on to jack the car up, it was badly bent and was metal to metal... took me a year to find out of where it was coming from (busy with work and just forgets that I had to check out) and finally gotten to check it out - went for test drive... man it made a big difference!!!! no rattle noise or anything and I am happy to hear that...

Now, what do you tell the car places to be careful with them or what? So I saved myself $77 from the mechanic to check out...!
Cheers

Well done on finding the problem but if you had given the job to the mechanic he more than likely would have put it on a hoist and "tightened" the bush up so he would have not found it.

That’s a common place to get noise from. The 98+ WRX has an annoying 'clunk' when you take off hard.... Guess what causes this 'clunk' that’s right the diff hanger......

AHA! thats' another one to nail down for me, how did I miss that? ( runs to car, jacks up car, begins screaming hysterically and stumbles back to pc...)

ummm., yep, those and the nearly absent diff mount rubber are disturbing facts indeed.....(begins muttering under breath, in presence of wife and kids) ... I'm gonna fix that )(*&^(*&^%*(&%* mechanic, I am if it's the last thing i do..

Thanks guys, in helping one person out, you have helped many more, especially me.

p.s. no mechanics will be harmed during my rebuild...

I check for bent plates and rocks stuck between these plate and bush as part of a service on a Subaru. A little piece of blue metal rock stuck between the plate and bush can cause some fierce noises.

Nah that metal plate where the 3 bolts was attached was bent. So I straighten it up and the problem was solved.
