Broken promises after an election - this is part and parcel of any party anywhere.

The reason is in Australia we cop it on the chin - we're like that. We don't seem to care enough that our political leaders say's they'll do one thing and then do another - yeah we piss and moan about it when it happens but what do we do about it - sweet f a.

I find it hard to cop when someone says that the government will effect interest rates (in Australia anyway) the reason being - the pollies in power are quick to take the kudos for low interest rates but quick to distance themselves and their ability to control it when they start to climb - so which one is it?

BENduro wrote: It's important to note that it was Labor (Hawke/Keeting) who initiated the strong economy we are now experiencing with the floating of the $ and forging of south-east asian relations, among others. Previously high interest rates were more the result of a world-wide recession than economic mismanagement.
Pretty much forced into that on the world stage, it was NO visionary decision if thats what you thought!
BENduro wrote: Howard has squndered much of the wealth of this nation, ...
Excuse me but there was ~100billion in government debt that needed to be payed off, and now there is a big kitty there too....which Labor will just spend spend spend and forget to keep track that theres no money left....well thats what they did in the past, any reason for them to not behave the same again?
The previous government may have missed opportunities to spend some money in visionary concepts, but the economy didn't require it because there was plenty going on in free enterprise. And where they did, were hampered by Labor State governments, ie water planning.
BENduro wrote: I voted Labor based on having a social and pollitical conscience and I look forward to us once again becomming a progressive, caring, sharing and tollerant nation:)
Just remember, alot of caring, sharing, tollerance starts at home..before you point the finger...... the fact is we as a people have become more selfish, more materialistic, intolerant.....

IMHO Howard government was very fair in many ways - supported payouts to terminated employees of bankrupt Co, eg Ansett, there was that Abbortoir in nsw.......but also not, particularly dismayed with how those extreme anti-terrorist laws got bashed through and they are shown to not work fairly and don't work anyway.

Thats what happens when government rules both upper and lower houses, they can push whatever they nearly like through.
Its a two edged sword as Howard found out....the IR laws not being particularly fair maybe?
The point about a vibrant economy is that if one employer is not going so well, and needs to lay off staff, theres another one across the road going better, needing more staff and and paying better too. With less of the Union inspired restrictions, it allows business to run with the ebb and flow of its operations, giving more confidence and investing in new ideas, expanding, new business ideas etc etc etc......run away success.......
STOP that and......well we might see......just give it a few years

Ah, don't believe I was pointing the finger:confused: Was I:confused:
And yeah, there may be money in the bank but I still think this is 'squandered' as there are a multitude of investments that could've and should've been made to ensure the nations progression.
Anyway, just an opinion...Tried to make it as informed as I could;)

I Agree Ben with some of those points (the ones I knew :))
I'm even happier today for having labor in power, because in my part of the world they have already proposed to put in a $500m Wind farm project which will match that of the Hydro Tasmania's wind farms.

Our local Railway is now going to be restored from a standing still. The railway is on a main route for logging, so this will take some trucks off the roads. Awesome.

The thread should stay...healthy debate is good and I see everyone has an opinion of course all coming from different points of view.

Some have a business, some buying a house, some voting for the first time. As long as we all respect each others views, the election has and will affect us in different ways.
