carbon cannister probs. ej22

Post by Alex » Sun Apr 08, 2007 1:09 pm

Hi all,

we have just finished my conversion, and i have one semi large problem. The corbon cannister is filling with fuel after abit of driving. It then leaks out the breather hole in the bottom. It has to a fuel line connected wrong or sumthing...anyone got any ideas?

cheers

Makes me wonder where the fuel is coming from... you do have a fault code relating to your purge control solonoid which is connected to the carbon canister.

For now... i would disconect the carbon canister and block all the lines... This will work for now... only problem resulting from this may be some built up pressure in the tank but during these cooler days it would be fine.

I would have to research more on how the fuel return system works on the carb L series... i was under the impression that anything coming out of the evap lines of your tank and into the canister had to go via a fuel/vapour separator that would have to fill up completely with fuel before it would put fuel into the canister.

This does sound like a similar problem to Aspro... his carbon canister was removed and plugged but over time the built up pressure did split his fuel tank.

This i think would be a carby tank problem i would assume... i think caused by the location and diameter of the fuel return lines.

that has more to do with the fuel pickup than the return.

The Lseries has 3 lines going to the fuel tank, the larger return line is the vapour line, that is the one that should go to the cannistor. (3 connectors on the cannistor, now EJs only have 2 on the cannistor, so the hose must go somewhere else on the vapour circuit)
Easy to get the return fuel/vapour mixed, the result is that fuel coming from the bottom of the cannistor, and happens when you turn engine off or hot conditions forcing fuel from tank, or a pressure build up in the tank, because fuel up the vapour line is blocking , where it normally goes the the cannistor to relieve pressure - with which its a closed circuit.

Also note the vapour line enters high up on the fuel tank filler.

I would not suggest the stupid idea of drilling a hole in the fuel cap - just fix it properly now that you should understand it a bit more....i hope?

Looks like thats what they have done... got the vapour and the return mixed up.
