If you have a reduction drive starter u can use the starter to power your car just about anywhere... it's not recomended for the other style starters though... i forget what there called.

with water crossings you are not ment to turn the car fof as it sucks water in to the engine. a good way to stop the engine getting to wet is to but a tarp or somthing similar across the front of your car to create a barrier

Do bonnet scoops significantly affect a cars water crossing ability because even if it isnt directly letting water in, it lets air out allowing more water to come in from below?

That's an interesting point. I can imagine it would let more air out but I can't imagine it would make any actual significant difference. Engine bays aren't even the slightest bit air tight to begin with...

Yes I agree with AndrewT interesting but nup. Also you need to look at where your air intake is located (under guard near tyre) as Subarino said he has lost an engine or 2 and 1 of mine is questionable all due to water in the last 12 months alone.

Note that just cause there are few water crossing atm last winter on the Mundaring trip alone we did what about 3 before our car had issues, and I should not that we had cars stopping on those crossing as well (names with held to protect their egos lol) – that was on 1 trip.

When we went on the BYB BBQ I actually avoided a water crossing on purpose as I did not feel like stuffing around with cars in water that were not prepared - note that this crossing also ate Vidler’s now Chris's car on a recon trip.

The Harvey area has 4 that we know of and we have not done that much recon and for my next recon trip I think I am going to have to cross a creek just to get to the camping site – I let you now how it goes.

As Subarino said we have them as the water crossing will continue (WON’T they Dave!!!) its just the depth that varies and yes water displacement spray and tarps, turning off fans etc will all be unutilised.

The other thing worth mentioning is that I was getting fine sand and dust in my air box from as its so dry 4WDing atm and this is not an issues either - well the dust might be, we’ll see.

Yep this is the closest thus far LOL.

It had more to do with 1) being board and 2) when I got the nuts they were covered in some VERY thick white paint (cause the rims were white as well).

I was thinking about how to breaking up the colour of the black rim and the white nuts did not look so good do I gave a few of them a squirt with some red paint. It will not last trust me after having the socket on them and a few km’s and it already coming off.

After a HUGE amount on though and research I decided to go with what I though was 1 of the simplest and easiest option. I made some very simple brackets both backs with some rubber (so I did not have metal on metal – for obvious reasons). The A pillar bracket is screwed on with 2 decent self threading screws and the quarter panel bracket is held firmly by a small 90 degree bracket which I held onto the panel with a nut and bolt and then the snorkel connects to this. Given its light weight and the angels there is not real pressure being placed on any 1 component.

Ian it depends i suppose, i would have to add it all up. Very very rough would be around $300ish.... If a couple people where interested i could possible get a discount on the mandrel bends (looking at around $40 each X 3), pipe(around $50), flex tube ($40), snorkel tops($50), mig wire, hose clamps, etc. The more material you buy generally the cheap you can get thus the cheaper they are to make. Also the more you make the better/quicker you get it at.

Cheers

FYI I am in NO WAY comparing mine to Matt’s nor to Subarino’s, however fyi on price alone i think that Dave’s is about this price as well and mine was built for about 1/3 of this.

I did a water test with my snorkel... as in, seeing how much it would suck in during EXTREAM rain... it is definatly worth buying the genuine snorkel tops if nothing else.

Almost directly hosing the intake resulted in no water into the air box. I actually had to feed the hose beyond the snorkel top to actually get any water to come out the bottom... surprised me a lot, but the water gaps on the bottom of the snorkel tops are designed VERY well.
