EA81 Alternator

This afternoon my Brumby's alternator decided that enough was enough and subsequently stopped working.

Does anyone know if there is a 'better than OEM' alternator available for the (1989) EA81? My preference is to fit a brand new, top quality alternator to my vehicle, however I don't know what my options are.

Constructive thoughts and ideas would be appreciated.

I used to be a parts interpreter for a rather large car parts distributor here in WA.
When my alternator died I went looking for a larger replacement as a standard off the shelf solution, and couldn't find anything larger than the standard 55A.

You could have one rewound to output a larger amperage I think... ring around your local auto electricians.

As for increased reliability options, I don't really know of any aftermarket items being better or worse than the OEM ones. Not really a part thats replaced often...

Would an ea82 one fit... they made up to a 65amp i belive.

what about the 100amp GM alt swap? minor mods only required to fit i believe except if you have a/c then it wont fit. just an option.

EA82 alternators are exactly the same.... although the only replacements I could find a while back were 55amp.

Nice thought, however my Brumby's got aircon and there's no way I'm getting rid of it.

I had an auto electrician have a look at the Brumby today. It appears that my old alternator had already been rebuilt at least once and he didn't recommend rebuilding it again.

He says he can get an aftermarket 60amp alternator which will be fitted tommorrow morning so I should be back on the road again soon. I'll try and get all the details and post them here for anyone else who might need to replace their alternator.

Sounds good Jack. Is the 60amp alternator an off the shelf item or a built up one?

Jack i see you are going for the more technologically advanced ea82 l-series altenator - I guess the brumby ea81 just isn't good enough!!

I hear you there man. mines got it to but it hasnt worked since ive had it so it wouldnt bother me to take it out lol. oh well just a thought.

That's weird. A mate of mine has a bosch 100amp alt which was a direct bolt on to his L series. Kept the aircon and all.. The thing looks pretty much the same as a standard one only it is longer and has 100amp stamped on it IIRC.

very interesting... i have been told the same info as Tim from countless auto electritions.

As it is i still can't find an alternator bigger than 70Amp to suit a ej22.

I had an 85 amp alternator on my ea81.

Had a Nissan Bluebird casing with EA Falcon internals. Had to make a small spacer for the alternator mount and bingo had an 85 amp alternator in my coupe for next to nothing.

Make sure they're both BOSCH units as the stuff transfers across.

Well, the alternator is in and I'm back on the road.

It's a Hitachi ARJ024 (12 volt / 60 amp)

I would elaborate more, but that's all I know. It came in the car when he got it (as in, on the passenger seat, brand new.) The engine had a rather large hole in the top of it so really the $150 he spent on it was worth it just for the alt. His a member on this board, Lukes6 I think his alias is.

I've also heard the 80's Nissan Maxima's alt is a straight swap (80amp I think?) But I have not tried this yet.

hmm...i desperately need a bigger alternator..way too much stereo and lighting..might have to get serious about doing sum research...

grrr u should have said so earlier Alex... i was down in rockingham with a handfull of ea alternators.

I noticed Tim had a brand spanking new alternator sitting on an engine in the shed too... you might pay to drop him a PM.

The 60Amp one tht is referred to is apparently off some RX Turbo's. It is what i have on my ute.
