extreeme overheating
yesterday my car (ea82t) started to overheat from just normal driving (like half an hour drive) on the way for some sand 4x4. by the time i got there temp needle was just before the red. normal operating temp is like a 1/4 or a third up the gauge. throughout lots of cooling down periods temp fluctuated between just over half and up to the red. i even got it to there on way home from work today-10mins.
obviously checked coolant, both fans (including new thermo), oil etc. water pump seems fine too. rad fins arent blocked. any other ideas?
there is one other thing- i remember i had just put in a little morey's upper cyl lube/injector cleaner after hearing about how good it is, and it says can also be used as lead replacent. would this cause my overheating?
else i may just take it to a rad shop as need it fixed by this w/e. argh!
cheers for suggestions
matt.

Second Mattim's suggestion. Definitely remove the thermostat and run it without it to test, it's probably not opening propperly.
Chuck the thermostat in a cooking pot of water on the stove and watch it to see if it opens too.

Agreed... only takes a small air bouble sitting above the thermostate to stop even a working thermostate opening... remove it to be sure.

get antother radiator i reckon and try that or take yours out and give the fins a good clean as they could have mud it it also check the water it the overflow bottle is getting filled and over flowing it could be a blown head gasket, they leak into the water jacket on boost and pressurise the cooling system..

sounds similar to my problem, only now i think its had it!! its worse!!
my temp used to fluctuate after about 40 mins of normal driving,
but i've had 3 thermostats, a new radiator and a c02 test (came back all good) nothing helps, i still cant find the prob.

Just remember EA's are great for bizarre ways of blowing head gaskets or just weird things like corroded out cooling galleries.
I drove my last MPFI for nearly 1 year with a blown head gasket (usto get hot hot!). Basically used fuck all water or showed any signs of a blown head. Then when the unspeakable happened and I had to strip the car I noticed the head gasket.

DO NOT under estimate the effects of a faulty radiator cap... maybe look into that too.
