Reconditioned Gearbox

Post by DaveJS » Wed Mar 23, 2022 1:04 pm

I'm having issues with my gearbox on a 2008 Subaru Forester Manual.
There's a whirring noise when the vehicle is moving plus a shuddering when on full lock steering.
I've been told by my mechanic in Melbourne that the bearings in the gearbox need replacing and possibly a new viscous coupler, all this will cost around $4000.

The alternative would be to get a reconditioned gearbox from All Drive Subaroo in Sydney, which would cost $2200 for the gearbox plus delivery and pick-up of my old gearbox $300 then around $800 to fit so Total $3300.

The other option would be a secondhand gearbox which would probably be in the region of $2000 to 2500 fitted.
At the moment I'm thinking the reconditioned gearbox would be the best bet as I have no idea what condition the used gearbox will be in or whether the same problems will arise in the future.

Does anybody have experience with reconditioned gearboxes or know if there is a company like All Drive Subaroo that do reconditioned gearboxes for a similar price in Melbourne so I wouldn't have to pay the freight costs?

Have you tried "Subaru Reconditioned Gearbox Melbourne" or similar on Google?

G’day Dave,

From what I’ve heard of All Drive Suparoo they’re worth the freight costs!

Also a good time for any upgrades if you’re into off-roading your foz. I’d recommend their 1.6:1 low range as a minimum. Front LSD and an upgraded centre diff would be desirables in my book.

Cheers

Hi Freddo, I think you're right from what I'm reading online ADS sound pretty good. I don't really do much off-roading so will probably keep it simple, although they offer to change the gear ratio as part of the service. Plus;

⦁ Inspected and overhauled factory gears 1-5
⦁ Inspected hubs and sliders
⦁ Reconditioned ADS 4kg viscous coupling
⦁ Inspected synchronisers
⦁ New revised centre differential bearing kit
⦁ New gearbox bearings
⦁ Hi advanced bead blasted gearbox case
⦁ Complete serviced fork and rod kit
⦁ Serviced front differential
⦁ Set to strict ADS specifications

Yes, I did plenty of googling. ADS were by far the best for price and information so I'll probably ship it from Sydney.
