Fearing the worst.. ('81T)

Post by MY_STI » Tue Jul 25, 2006 6:23 pm

Rocker cover breathers are full of coffee, traces on the dipstick, compression readings of 700, 650, 550, 550 (in KPa 1,3,2,4, respectivly) and its lining the rocker covers, but no traces of water in the drained oil. Should have the heads off by friday arvo. No significant event recently that I would link to this.

Am I signing the ol' ea81T off a bit early?
Is there a chance anyone has a spare head or two, moreso the left?
Is there anywhere else the water could be picked up from, (condensation?) running open/filter breathers (no PVC). no river crossings of late either :)
Is it time to update to 4 valves per cylinder and distributorless ignition?

Jeff

Check the welsh plugs in the heads and if they are the problem replace them with brass ones

Thanks Jeff, hadn't really given them any thought, as I didn't notice any external leakage, I assume there are also internal welsh plugs?

RayZ on the old, old, board had a set of 81T heads, or access to a set.
I will try and dig out his details.

Sorry to hear about the mayonaise. how cold has it been getting at night?

Double checked compression on a good tester, got 825, 800, 850, 750 (KPa 1,3,2,4) which seems better than previous results. Might sign my tester off.

I reckon Jeff is on the money though.

Have to move the RX out of the shed before I lift the engine out, hampered by the fact it has no front running gear on it at the moment.
will wheelbarrow it out tomorrow.

Thanks guys

SKateboards under the front to move it!!!
Little welsh plugs under the rocker covers are the likely culprit?
I hope so.

Didn't need the skate board, suprisingly light with nothing in it. I eat all my weetbix!

Anyway, welsh plugs all appear to be ok, they already have brass items in, gave them a scratch and a poke with a centre punch and they seem healthy.
Will replace them anyway. But unfortunatly they dont look like the problem.

Any other possibilities? time to take the heads off?

Sounds like a HG on it's way out or a weepy intake gasket.

Well,
both heads have a crack between the valves, gasket on number three had blown out a little to a head stud, and a valve has hit the cylinder from my previous issue with the pushrod.

Can the heads be successfully welded?

Really leaning EJ about now.
