Bantum's '82 Touring Wagon ...

Post by Bantum » Wed Oct 17, 2012 2:17 pm

Hi, I'm posting this after some inquires from some of you, who are no doubt interested in My Touring Wagon ... :)

Image

Note : Image taken in Melbourne about 2004 ...

So here is a breif out line :

History : Born in 1982 - It's done about 200,000 km on the clock ... ( not sure about that, could be more ) I'm the 3rd owner of this car + I know the first owner ( local from Darwin ) ... ;-)

Add : Another shot I found of up front :

Image

Accessories :

Has a solid 50 mm lift kit + Roo Bar from Scorpion ( all original items ).

Also has the folowing factory approved items :
  • Rear Window Louvre
  • Headlight Covers
  • Front Mud Flaps
  • Tow Bar
Missing or would like is :
  • The roof rack ( missing parts )
  • Set of Mag wheels ( or scorpion ones to match the rest )
  • Winch of some sort
  • Rear cargo cover / blind ( missing )
Will have to keep an eye out for those ... :D

It also has kicking a custom sound sytem ...

Image

Another interior Shot :

Image

Not sure how many Km's it has got on now, but in the image above Approx. 250K + other interesting quirks like that it is one of the first of its kind, so worth keeping.

Plans : It's currently in storage awaiting a new engine & need's extensive repair's due usual wear & tear + rust removal ... :(

I'm trying to keep this one as original as possible, but not having much luck with that ...

To do list :
  • Fix Air con
  • Replace dizzy with a electronic one
  • Repaint once rust removed
Whish list :
  • Update / replace engine - EA81T ?
  • Upgrade gear box with low range + 5 speed ?
  • Replace all lights with HID or LED's
Will post more stuff done to it later ...

Enjoy ...

Getting rare nowdays.. as mentioned before, that looks in good nick. Does it still look this way after 8 years of life in NT?

Want more pics :)

Hard life ...

I've seen few - This one has had the roof / bonnet + rear resprayed ( with harsh sun + accident damage )

Looks can be deceiving, as it has a few rear end issues ...
Being stationary at lights & having someone run into back of you - not much fun ... :(
RSR 555 wrote:... Does it still look this way after 8 years of life in NT ... ?
Sadly no - it's been in Darwin for most of it's life ( Was in Melbourne only for short 2 - 3 years ), so showing signs of it's age. Also suffering from rust and paint damage from sitting in storage.

See link in tag below - I don't have any recent pictures as it is now in storage.

Ha - old school CAD before 3D stuff ... :p

P.S. - Have PDF's of these at higher res ... However - Do note that they are incomplete & may not match what was eventually done in my car, but should give you an idea of what's required at least. ( Sorry I'm missing all my hand drawn section details for this )...

I don't know how I missed this but back in your first post you mention you were looking for roof rack components.
Are you referring to the rack in the photos, ie, the factory rack that is only good for putting a couple of suitcases on ?
I am pulling mine off as I am not a fan of these racks.
Also, what size tyres do you have on the rims and are those rims factory Subaru. ?

Misssing bits ...

Post by Bantum » Sun Jul 20, 2014 3:01 pm

Yep - I do have the factory option one, however it's missing the plastic bits that fit on the ends of roof rails ( not on vehicle at present ) - Got a photo of yours ? I was also in two minds about whether to remove them all together.

Add : thanks to Willy :

Image

( Doh : lost it again, will try & find it )

Tyres : From memory they are Goodyear 185 x 75 mm r13" Grand tourer ? not sure you can still get them ... :(

Add : Well it turns out to be Grand Rally S :

Image

Rims : It has a mix of Subaru's 13" Wagon Wheels ( Both series I & II ) powder coated in 'charcoal' ... :)

Meant to take some photos today but ended up at the Dr's still trying to get over this cold/flu/whatever the hell sickness this is.
Will try to take some pics tomorrow.
I have taken the side/cross off and so far have left the roof rails on.
I don't know if I will leave the roof rails on to protect the roof or not.
If I end up with a set of high roof Rola racks and a basket the roof rails will definitely be coming off.
Have you lost all of the plastic roof rail end caps or only some ?

Yep that looks like 'em ... :)

I don't recall how many were broken / missing as it has been a while ( something like 20 years ago ), enough for me to remove them when I had the roof re-sprayed ... :(

Am thinking nowadays you could scan one & have them reprinted in 3D ... :p

If the opportunity comes up I wouldn't mind some more photos of the rear sliding draw and compartment.
Another thing, I seem to recall years ago I briefly took the entire roof rack and rail system off the car and took it for a drive.
I remember there was a noise from the roof section as I drove that reminded me of a wobble board being flexed (dare I say it, like when Rolf Harris played one).
The noise went away when I put the roof rails back on and this is why I have left them on now.
I cant recall any more details at the moment but I might take the lot off when the weather dries out and try it again.

OK, I think I can see it now, I thought at first everything was cut into the floor but I can see the floor is built up off the floor creating a cavity.
Wish the MY's had the under floor storage like the L series.

Yep - You would have to move the fuel tank underneath for that to work. This just sits on the floor & is bolted in for security ... :p

The height was determined by the size of aluminium stock available ( 80x6mm Flat Bar + 25x3mm Angle from memory ), the size of amps & the need to keep it as low profile as possible ( head room ) which would be a problem if it were not a high roof like the touring wagon has ... ;)

Cheers, Bantum ...

Note : Just checked the sizes on drawing & revised ...

Add : I might have a go at re-printing them in B&W, should help to make them a bit more legible ... :p

Thanks for that.
I have no idea when but I will have a go at digesting the drawings at some stage.
Not sure if I can see the dimensions but will have a look.
