After that amount of time the oil is filthy black and quite thin (but I change the oil while it's hot so that could be why) Last change I tried some of that oil flush stuff (on the same shelf as octane booster so wasn't expecting much

In my brum I use valvoline XLD 20w50 or 20/60 "high vis" (when 20/50 isn't in stock) and change it every 3 months when I remember. Should really keep track of oil changes better I think
Is it mineral oil thats supposed to have larger molecules? And synthetic will find any small leak to leak from?

) And amazingly it has made a difference; the oil stays cleaner longer and when I popped the rocker covers off last time everything looked brand new! I was quite amazed.

Be very careful with engine oil flushes. Never rev the engine whilst it's in there. Nulon is well known brand and I've even heard people using Diesel fuel as a flush. You really need to make sure these flushes are completely drained from your system before using the car again. I use the flushes all the time on engines that have really black oil but I use low grade oil with the flush, then drain after the require time, then run some more low grade oil (without the flush), then drain and fit new good oil and filter. I also drain the oil filter out each time and only replace with new at the end

Just a little hijack
I have found that chesterton 651 detergent lubricating oil does the same job as engine oil flush treatments and can even quiet lifter noise. It isn't cheap but I get it from work from the bulk store
I put 50ml in a day before the oil change, then when it comes time to change the oil I just do a normal oil and filter change.

Nachaluva pretty sure it was Nulon brand, I threw the bottle away by now. I didn't use the whole bottle because 1 bottle is supposed to treat more oil than my engine can hold
Its clear and runs like water, pour it into old oil and idle the engine for 15 minutes, drain and change as normal. I too was worried about getting it all out again so I let it drain for a good hour on an incline. Pauls suggestion of 2 oil changes would make doubly sure it was all out.
Haven't noticed a difference in engine running, but the oil is definitely cleaner for longer now. By the way, does anyone know if these detergent oils or treatments can actually dissolve nearly-failed old seals?

Thanks, I might try that next time with the extra oil change.
So let me see if I've got it right:
1) drain the oil & filter then refill with cheapo oil + oil flush, reuse old filter
2) idle as required
3) drain oil & filter then refill with cheapo oil, reuse old filter
4) idle again (or run for fews kms?)
5) drain oil then refill with good oil & replace filter with new

Perfect. This would only be done if the oil was very black to begin withNachaLuva wrote:Thanks, I might try that next time with the extra oil change.

If your oil is already black, then adding cleaner to it won't do as good as job as new cheap oil.. when I say cheap.. I mean like oil you'd buy on special at TargetSilverbullet wrote:I put the flush in with the old oil and idled for 15 minutes, otherwise you'd be buying 3 lots of oil!
