Alright alright, here's why the 88' touring wagon has to go

Nope Jonno it's not a vortex

Steve at Rising sun put it up on ebay last weekend for a decent price so I just watched it expecting the price to go through the roof, it didn't. So come Friday with no bids I went and had a look. He told me what he wanted for it, I said done and that was that

Went and picked it up this morning, all done and dusted. It's a really solid little ute all round but there's the usual wear and tear in/around the tray. Mainly lots of dents, dings and rusty surface scratches from a life of use. Other than that everything is great. All the time while I was working on the other wagon I was looking for something else and I wasn't really expecting the wagon to be usable for more than 6 months anyway. So I spent a bit more and saved myself the headache.

Now there's going to be 5 cars in the driveway...I really have to stop buying cars

No plans for any serious mods, just going to keep it stock as a daily driver for now. After the bullet is done then who knows!

Bahaha sven were you watching the ebay listing? I hope I haven't upset anyone by nabbing it before it ended properly

Jonno, tray dings are enough to be a bit of an eye sore. Especially where the floor sags in between chassis rails but I'm not too bothered by it. Might post a pic of the rear tomorrow. Also the rear gate needs some fiddling to get the latch to work, as is you need to reach over and pull the pushrods manually

You should be able to find one Bennie; I've noticed alot of clean Brumbies sell in the eastern states for about half what they go for here. E.g drove past one at a dealers (didn't have a close look) with bull bar and rear canopy - $6000

Pics of the tray dents as promised complete with dirt; I swear as soon as you've got a ute everyone wants something moved

This gap at the bottom of the tailgate where the inner panels have bowed inwards seems to exist on alot of Brums out there...

The minister for fun and finance has told me if I want any more Subaru's I have to get rid of one of the ones I have.
I couldnt decide which to part with between the MY or the L series so I guess Lotto has to come to the rescue.
There was a heavily modified Brumby about 20 minutes up the road from me a while ago with an EJ conversion, lift etc but when I questioned the owner on where the bonnet protector came from he responded (with a smile I'm sure) he couldnt remember but for the price of the car I could have the protector.

Yeah, maybe, but for a decent one you've got to pay the coin when you find it. I'm happy for a project but now while we're renting - I'm not "allowed" to change my oil according to my T. agreement!!!

That's definitely a working ute! But the rest of the body looks to be pretty good condition and no serious rust in the tray - all good for a paint job to make it pretty again!

My 84 is much the same re back of the tail gate at the floor, the sunken floor between rails, scratches and dents everywhere and a mashed moustache bar washers to go with it - 800kg loads did not do it, must have been more than that and some jumps !

Good to see you got a Brumby. Is the dash I sold you going in the Brumby or the wagon? Still have my Brumby for sale even though I don't want to part with it but I have to.

G'day RX Coupe, that very nice dash is definitely going in the wagon still, when I find an analogue sports style cluster. The interior of this ute is in fantastic shape as it is except the dash ironically which has 2 massive splits in it, one you can fit your hand in almost. A simple dash mat will fix that well enough though.

News on this ute; me and dad spent a couple of hours sanding down the tray; turns out all the orange rusty looking stuff was just stained paint. The actual scratches were quite small and a rub down with steel wool and soapy water brought it back pretty nicely. The exposed scratches will just rust again so I'm in the process of re-painting the tray with white primer for now, maybe proper paint one day. Rego paperwork is in the mail so I may be driving this daily next week

My piece of advice: treat the rust properly before re-sealing it. I've done the same and in two years the job is ten times bigger to sort out now

It's surface but still it's rust that needs to be treated, if not it's only going to get worse and eventually it won't just be surface rust.

It was barely even surface rust, and it's all gone now except for the rusty bit at the bottom of the cab. Like I say steel wool and 400 grit paper and there was nothing left but bare metal where the scratches were and good paint everywhere else.

I plan to cut the worst bit at the cab out and weld in a new piece...one day

I know that feeling. I'm going to have a crack at patching it up like new with this stuff:

Hopefully it will do the trick well. I've found a new motivation to work on this one since getting it out of the shed yesterday
