Sway bar delete?

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Tue Oct 23, 2012 8:28 pm

I was wondering if anyone beside me thinks it could be a good idea.

I have heavier-than-stock King Springs and like-new shockies from Guyph.
My car is rock-solid and hardly leans at all in corners at high speed,
despite the 2" body lift and 185/70R-14 tyres.

Reasons why I might want the swaybar gone:
extra wheel articulation
a small benefit in weight savings.

Offroad reasons against taking off the swaybar?
Its located in front of the front axle shafts, so may provide a bit of bash protection.

Thoughts?

Remove them both, take it for a drive and see what you think. Personally I can run my car which is higher than a landcruiser without sway bars and I don't have an issue. There is a fair bit of body roll just in general driving though but it isn't unbearable.
I currently have quick disconnects so I have them on for onroad then quickly disconnect them for offroad  The best of both worlds...

Been running a brumby for the last few years without any front sway bay. Was mucking around with the L series lower control arm conversion but went back to brumby. I had taken the sway bar out as it didn't fit onto the l series lower control arm. It was such a pr...ck to get out that I just left it out. Probably will put it back in over at my brothers who has a 4 post hoist.

Car runs after market fairly strong front shocks (I'd have to go and have a look at what they are.) but the car is very comfortable and stable on the road..no roll on corners...running a 3inch lift.

Wouldn't get past an inspection though...

Running without sway bars onroad is illegal so do so at your own risk.

However offroad disconnecting the sway bars will have a large affect on articulation, therefore lessening the occurance of diagonal spin. When going on fairly decent offroad trips you could consider unbolting the ends of the swaybar and just tucking it up out of the way. Or as Taza said make quick disconnects.

On short drives offroad I find it isn't worth the effort to disconnect.

you can just un bolt it and bend the flaps out of the way when you go off-road (like taza and david have said)... that said, mine is normally disconnected because i haven't been bothered to bolt it back up. I think taza is talking about something similar to a quick release on a bike wheel to release it.

2HY have you thought about only running 2 bolts to hold your wheels on? save approximately 1.723% more weight than disconnecting your anti-sway bar....

i dont know if it is legal/illeagal, but i seriously doubt they would pick up on that... seriously grasping at straws if it has gone to that stage.

like everything else, try it. if you like it, leave it. if you dont, put it back.

This is probably the case whilst they are new but after about 40,000kms or approx 2 years, this will change. Whilst going around one corner might not have a big rolling effect, this will change dramatically once you need to swerve a few times to miss object on the road.

True, you will get 'extra' articulation but come on.. how much serious 4WDing are you doing that your front wheels are leaving the ground?

Bwahahaha.. oh.. you're serious.. lol

You would save more weight running only half a tank of fuel.. you might not get to some places but at least you got that extra 0.0000001mpg

Again.. what sort of 4WDing are you doing?

In closing, I think if you really are serious about taking your sway bar off for 4WDing, then just remove the bottom bolt (on each side of your swaybar to lower arm) before you go out and then reconnect after you've been out having fun.. this should take all of about 10mins to do each time.
