ea82t top mount intercooler....

Post by subelover » Mon Jun 19, 2006 10:54 am

hi guys a few questions regaurding intercooling a ea82t.

using a wrx top mout coola, what are the best ways/options for preventing heat soak? is it an issue? thinking a fan underneath and a decent fit to the bonnet scoop ie:foam or some sort of seal.. to prevent the heat entering. not overlly keen on front mounts cause of the added length in the piping.. more lag and less throttle response so i think stay with the top mout.

so please tell me ur opinions and ideas and if any 1 has pics of what they have done please post them im open to all suggestions and ideas for the intercooler.

anyway cheers BEN

Here's ours:

We didn't do anything fancy about cooling, other than fit a small bonnet scoop.

dont know about the wrxs but my B4 has a rubber/plastic peice made up that seals on top of the intercooler to the bonnet scroop. Still a fan underneath might be a good idea if you could fit one, i'd be seriously struggling to fit anything bigger than a computer fan on mine with all the extra piping (TT).

Fitting a fan could be tight (and like Matt’s B4 it will be a small fan due to space and then prob pointless) and not really needed – not a bad idea only not sure where you would put it – oh and I am assuming that it will blow/sucking air from the top of the engine to the bottom? I am running 1 and no issues to date although I have not had it long as for the heat soak that’s the joys of owning a turbo, just make sure that your cooling system is good and you should be fine. Therefore my 2c go the TMIC and forget the fan

i have no issues with heatsoak affecting engine temp. It just affects intercooler and air temp, and the computer does not have anyway to accomodate this so basically to avoid detonation tuning has to be done for the worst case scenario (sitting still for a couple of minutes and then flooring it).

So im loosing performance at ideal conditions or i have to drive very carefully all the time when its not ideal.

Some US people have changed there MAF to a blow through type setup (after the intercooler i believe) which would mean the computer could tune for this as it has intake temp correlation tables and would be reading the post turbo temp as an intake.

but even so i think a fan would help as long as it didnt reduce flow when the car is moving.

Hi, I'm new at this forum and with Subaru's. I got my first Subaru last night and it still has a little punch in it after 237000km so i'm pleased.

But that doesen't matter, what I was wondering about was where did you get this intercooler craigus?
I tried to search around a little but I couldn't find anything.

If you have a lifted car then fitting a fan under the IC isnt hard to do, if you scour the wreckers of Jap stuff there where a few Tojos that cane with small fans on the back of oil coolers which fit under the Suby AAIC easily enough. When i had my L wagon i fitted a Nissan Patrol scoop and found it and the fan to be very effective at keeping temps down at low speeds (playing in the dirt) It was cool enough that the exit side was always only warm to the touch

that intercooler apears to be out of the first series of wrx, but you can do preety much the same thing with any other top mount wrx intercooler. You can do preety much the same thing with any top mount intercooler.

Just wondering why the WRX topmount in that picture is mounted so far back? Surely it could be mounted in more or less the same spot as on the WRX. The air flowing through it needs somewhere to go...

As stated, it's one out of an early model wrx - we paid about $125 at a Jap import place, I think.

Turbo to i/c is a standard radiator hose that we got from Repco. They let us search through their parts bins until we found something suitable. It suits a Holden, but I forget what model. I had concerns about the material perishing with the heat, and also with it sucking flat on low/no boost, but it has been fine. The i/c to intake hose is a piece of truck radiator hose, also from Repco. The bend is just PVC pipe. Again, I had concerns about the PVC not taking the heat and/or being dissolved by petrol vapour, but it seems fine.

You're probably right in suggesting that it isn't the ideal spot. I just put it there and then plumbed it in.
