A bit of searching inspired by another thread uncovered this

FB16 with a low mount turbo and direct injection

A lack of power steering pump suggests an electronic power steering pump

Looks like four cam angle sensors and a cast front case almost certainly means chains instead of belts .
The lower front mount turbo has been done before but I don't know about cats before the turbocharger .

The new engine in the BRZ.. looks fantastic

Dual VVTI means this 1.6 kicks out as much as the old 2.0

Definitely chain driven but to me the cats are after the turbo.. from these pics you can't see the header pipes to the turbo

Yep chain driven cams and AVCS on both intake and exhaust.
This makes the 3rd variant of the FB engine for Subaru, joining the FB20 and FB25.
There is talk that the WRX will get a FB20 with a turbo.

The new BRZ actually has an FA20, which was co-created with Toyota and features its D-4S dual direct injection featured on the new Lexus. It also has a square bore/stroke of 86mm x 86mm and a 12.5:1 compression ratio.

Yeah I agree that the cat is post turbo from what we can see, but Subaru have had pre-turbo cats for about 10 years now

The rumour I've read is, FHI intend to use the BRZ as the basis for the WRX car with the engine above mated to an AWD box. This way they will be eligible for WRC as the engine will be within the WRC guidelines.

Nah wont be the BRZ or anything BRZ based. Its not designed for AWD, the engine is too far back to allow front driveshafts.

The new WRX will be based on the newest Impreza, but will it become a standalone model. (kinda like how the Forester is based on the Impreza floorpan)

That's what always had me puzzled with cars like AWD skyline's and the AWD commodore's?

Im intrigued by the top-mounted, downward-facing oil filter there's a mess waiting to happen, with what looks like a drain hole in the bottom of the collector ring to run the spilt oil nicely down the cam covers, onto the cat...

I know the AWD skylines had the front diff in the engine sump! I kid you not!!

The skyline uses a 90 degree PTO (for want of an abbreviation) on the back (side) of the gearbox which runs to a diff under the motor.

As for the commonwhore, fairies and pixie dust make it all work

When GM bought shares of Subaru, then an AWD commodore appears, I guessed they would be pretty similar to the subaru version.

I guess I should go to showrooms more and learn this sort of thing by eye-balling new cars...

SORRY Upon reflection, it might just be one of the shafts passing through the diff with the diff externally mounted...

The AWD commodore was definitely a product of GM's major stake in Subaru. But I don't see what Subaru got other than larger SUV style models...

PS, I've found out about the sump thing on ebay when looking for diffs/info on diffs etc. But I think I'll have to scope out one of those AWD holden things at a car yard... I don't think they're setup for a 50/50 power split, rather something like 30/70 front/rear to keep the "rear wheel drive" feel that many expect from Holden...

Bennie I pulled a front cut of a skyline apart and an exiga? and they both had the same system, it was a great system but a pain in the arse to dismantle. just glad I didn't have to put them back together just tag them and put them on a shelf.

I agree, highly unlikely the cat before the turbo. Looks like exhaust manifold reversed to exit stage left rather than right as per the unturbo'd XV. Compare with <http://drive2.subaru.com/Win11/itsWhatMakes.htm>

This FB16 is clearly the same one released on overseas XVs, but with turbo (and cam chains). In AUS we've only got the FB20 on the XV, and I wonder if I'll be able to retrofit a turbo in the future (after it arrives that is...)
