Reflective tape on roof rack for visibility?

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Tue Oct 25, 2011 10:37 pm

I was wondering if this might be a good idea.
Driving in rolling hills, I think it might be good so people can see you sooner.
I was considering a thin strip running down the leading edges in silver
and a thin strip down trailing edges in red.

Do you think that would look weird?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I think you have too much time on your hands if you are spending time pondering putting reflectors on your roof rack!!

By the time the oncoming (or trailing) car's headlights hit your reflective strips, I'd suggest they'd have seen your headlights (or tail lamps), or at least the glow they produce!

I wouldn't bother, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

on the rear could be good if you have baterry issues or a flat on the side of the road

Hah. Go the alternating red and blue on the front and rear.
Guaranteed to make even the most inconsiderate driver dip their high beams.
I used to have two ladders on the trade ute's racks, one had a red top, the other was blue. Always faced them forward.

My thoughts too!!

But seriously go for it if you feel the need - I think you'll find that no one will change their headlight high-beam behaviour with this, people are just plain lazy when it comes to driving these days. Sad but true.

I find people dip them pretty quickly when you hit them with 100W Lightforce spotties.
You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.

True. Last night driving the calder freeway from Macedon to Bendigo, a bit over an hour. It seems that people think you don't need to dip your high beam when on a freeway, even when following another vehicle!

For example, on one straight stretch there were 4 vehicles, front one and the third one had their high beams on. 3-4 seconds of 3x hella 100s with 130watt globes convinced them to dip their headlights without complaint from those with their lights already dipped. So Ruby Scoo 2, oncoming vehicles 0. I think I had about 8 rounds of high beam wars, with only one contested where they continued with their high beams on as they passed me who had put my highs back on.

Love high beam wars, more so when I win!

I overtook a guy at about 8pm a few weeks ago. He was doing just below the speed limit and he didn't like being over take nand had his high beams on behind me. So I pulled over, let him go past then BAMN hit him with my hi beams, front spots and roof spots all running atleast 130watt globes

He got shitted off and tried to brake to make me crash into him but my Foz with 4 wheel disk brakes are no match for his shitty ford ranger ones. lol

Bit off track but I thought I would share.

Go the high beam wars!

back on topic lol... I'v put reflectors inside my doors so when they're open people can see them more easily & hopefully not drive into em!

2nd Hand, i dont think people will see reflectors on your roof from a distance. You could do what truckies do & wire up a line of LEDs...They can be seen from a distance

Your brakes are junk compared to the ranger brakes. Your brakes are junk period. Need some new ones. :p
(Talking about Tazas Foz only).
IMO reflective tape would be a tad redundant. Pointless during the day unless your car is clad in invisibility material and during the night they will see your headlights anyway.

With a good set of high beams or spots they will see the glow of your light from a couple of KM away.

They're not as good as a set of Brembo STi brakes... Other than that I don't know, I'm convinced the worst brakes subaru produced are on the MY's and L series' out there :???: Especially when you put larger tyres on them.

Alex,

A handful of ball bearings/marbles when passing in the opposite direction takes care of those Alex.

There is story of guy with an old Holden S/W out of Gympie Qld, he had a row of spotties setup on a roof rack and connected to a generator in a trailer, he used to like playing spotlight wars with the truckies. The cops had a hard time trying to catch him in the act, so one night a truckie flung a handful of ball bearings into the front of the car as they were playing spotlight wars, then rang the cops to come and collect the guy out of the table drain, they reckon the car looked like it had been hit with a claymore mine, so the story goes.

Did a little research, and according to the NRMA:

Ford Ranger stopping distance from 80 km/h........29.4 mtrs.

Subaru Forester from the same speed.................24.7 mtrs

Taza wins. Go the Foz!
