loud annoying grinding noise?

Post by Luke82 » Tue Oct 04, 2011 4:50 pm

ok so heres the story. my 93 L series has a 2" body lift and i found some 3" HD lifted springs not so much for height but for suspension stiffness when off road. when i put them in i broke the CV joint on the passenger side so i replaced it with a brand new one. once it was all in and back together the camber was way way out so to rectify the camber i took the 2" body blocks off the front strut tops, it fixed the camber problem and the car was still 1" higher than before the springs were put in. perfect just what i wanted but when i drove down the street for a tester i noticed a loud grinding noise coming from the passenger side, front of the car. my first thought was the wheel bearing so i replaced it with no change to the noise. its not the brakes because it only starts when i get to about 15kp/h and if im driving on a sweeping bend to the left it stops when i turn the wheel to a certain point and its quiet like it used to be as soon as i straighten the wheel it comes back... can anyone tell me what it is thats making this noise please

Is it your new CV joint? Did you replace the joint or whole shaft.

Funny things CV shafts and their joints. set of mine sound perfect when I am on my own or shove a heavier occupant on LHS. Swap us around with my 90 kg shall we call him and mr 80 in LHS front we get CV knock on LHS on turns or standardish height vehicle -actually 7mm below Subes spec lowest ! ? !

Hey, can you do a vid of it like Silverbullet did ?- pictures and sounds beat words any day !

I'd be looking closer at your CVs as well, they can do some weird things as Steptoe has mentioned!

Were these new out of the box CVs or second hand? I ask this because I swapped my CVs from left to right to try and use them for a bit longer as they were clicking away like a mother bitch, that clicking on acceleration turned into a nasty grinding sound on engine braking. New out of the box shafts sorted this.

Cheers

Just double check that your bash plate or any other bits and pieces is not fouling on anything else.

the CV (one only) was brand new in the box from repco and its a repco branded one so could be dodgy?? is there a length difference between passenger and driver side CV joints? nah nothings fouling up on the engine side of things and as for rubbing on the guards it only started to do that when i put the 27" tyres on but thats a whole different sound lol. its got me stumped this one.

I had exactly the same problem, car was grinding like a pig & it was just the backing plate.

I also had a similar problem about 20yrs ago but I divorced her.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA it always ends up being the backing plate 2mm of metal and yet the tiniest bump upsets it

Mine sounded like a caliper on metal or a pipe wedged under the car grinding on the road, went right through ya spine, the backing plate sounded very similar too & both easily fixed.
