Why - the glovebox change - L Series ?

After a water bottle laying on its side in my L Sedan glovebox leaked (thanks to ALDI design?) and soaked into my silver seal leak fixer cardboard tube - things grew rather yucko from the silver seal contents and yucked ou the glovebox. spare came in handy so swapped things around.

Noted the 85 models used a soft velvet finished applied to the insides of the glovebox with solid stopper rubbers on the outer edge.

The 87 model used velvet covered foam applied to the innards instead and paddle wheel style rubber stoppers.

It is nice to know Subaru changed or improvd such subtle things with same L Series model, but gotta ask why bother ? Maybe new manufacturer or assembly provider.

Looks like 85 got a deep choccy brown in the L Sedans (making it a Jaffa with the flare red *'duco' as me pop called car paint) and the 87 Touring Wagon got lighter shade of brown.

My 1993 is just black plastic on the inside. I haven't checked what that stopper looks like.

back in the late 1980s early 1990s Mr Fuji was at his desk, listening to a combination of Japanese techno and Wham. It was a confusing time in the east, a time when the country was being torn by traditional values and the influence of cultural leaders such Michael Jackson, George Michael, and the confusing sounds of Phil Collins, REM overshadowed by G&R entering their glory days.

Anyways, Mr Fuji was under pressure to increase sales, develop a new feel for the successful auto division. Concept cars were developed, 6 cylinder models, futuristic vans even. But Mr Fuji struggled to see how how would impact on his customers.

A world away, a young man was struggling for cash, trying to make his way in the world. Having bought a NA L-Series, noting the velvet glove box, this young go-getter set about traveling around SA working from farm to farm, workshop to workshop. As funds were scare, he thought he would place half 500ml bottle of coke for 'ron' in the glovebox whilst at WIlliam Creek meeting up with a road crew. The job secured, he left for 3 weeks.

The bottle remained insitu...

That bottle of coke suffered in the 50C heat, ruptured spewing its sugary goodness throughout Mr Fuji's improved glove box. Returning to a flat battery, a cabin full of ants, and a sticky residue that god himself could not remove, he fell to his knees, the sand burning his skin on contact. Arms raised, sweat poring off his face, ants crawling up his legs, he bellowed a 'Nooooooo' that was heard thousands of miles away in Japan.

Mr Fuji at the time was in a board meeting, discussing why they should release ONLY 6 Touring Wagons with the grey interior to the AUDM, heard the cry of pain, cocked a wry smile, smug with the reassurance that his minor change was felt a hemisphere away.

Objective achieved.

Was all good in the end. Whilst god himself could not clean it, a mate who could work for the mafia did. Seriously, no trace evidence...scary

Re cup holders, I didn't, but am dismayed my Liberty of the same era could not hold a Coopers without a stubbie cooler.

Especially the part about 50 C heat, ruptured Coke, flat battery,
cabin of ants and burning knees instantly upon falling to them.
We have ants and hot bitumen in Canadian summer,
but not to the extreme that exists in Australia.

Yeah I too am a little disappointed at this. Although I have heard that the yanks got bigger cup holders than the rest of the world. Must be for their supersize drinks

I don't know how you notice these things Jonno, but that's another bit of trivia for the L series! I still reckon it's the black sheep of the family and here's why:

1) The L series got a bastardised engine IMO - EA81 block modified to take a set of modified EA81 heads that accommodated the over head cam.

2) Trying to get some of the most basic parts for the L series is a nightmare unless you know what you're talking about - parts books can list them as an MY or a liberty if not under the "leone" category.

3) The low range lever is a lift up forward design rather than the MY's style of lift up rearwards that is still used today.

4) It is definitely one of the best looking subarus produced IMO, especially the RXII coupe that we didn't get here!

Same for the L series. We got some coin holders in the dodgiest place possible for Australia's rough road conditions!

Ruby Scoo will hopefully be sporting some new cup holders, unfortunately I'm keeping it in the family so they don't fit with a stubbie holder
